Computer won't turn on anymore

OK, so over the past 2 weeks, my build has been giving me massive issues, and last night refused to turn on at all.

2 weeks ago, the computer initially wasn't responding to the power switch, so I switched spots on the surge protector and it turned on.

The next day it happened again, and I had to plug it directly into the wall.

A few days later, it stopped turning on AGAIN, and I got it working by wiring a new power switch to the motherboard. I figured the front panel on my case went bad and ordered another one from Corsair.

The next day, the NEW switch wouldn't turn on the computer. I fiddled with it a bit (So technical) and eventually it turned on.

As of yesterday, nothing worked, and the computer couldn't be turned on at all. Mind you, the motherboard's standby LEDs are all lit, so I don't think the PSU is completely dead, but I'm stumped here. I even tried using a screwdriver to touch the power switch pins (in case it was a faulty switch issue) and nothing happened.

Any ideas what it could be?

The hardware in question: An old ass (but reliable) Corsair HX620 PSU, an ASUS Z77v-lk motherboard, running a slightly OCed (3.8Ghz) i5-3570K, with 16GB of RAM (4x4gb).

If anyone needs any further info, I'll be glad to provide all that I can. Looking to get up and running ASAP, while spending as little money as possible. Funds are low due to holiday shopping. I might stop by Walmart/Best Buy soon to pick up a new PSU to test/return, so see if that's the issue.

Thanks in advance!

Does the PSU run when the green wire is jumper-ed to ground (I think it's wires nos. 3 &4)?

Best bet is to try a PSU substitute.

I can try tonight when i get home. I'm waiting for my paycheck, and then I'll hit up best buy or microcenter for a local buy/return to test it out. It's funny, I've been meaning to replace the PSU for a while now, guess I might be forced to very soon.

Now, if the PSU were at fault, would the standby LEDs on the motherboard light up?

Yes, power supplies can put out enough to light LED's but not enough for a post..

On my wifes computer if you shut down by holding the power button rather than shut down from within windows, the system is a pain to boot up again. I have bought a new power supply but she will not let me install it yet.

Good to know, Burpo. Going to ground it when I get home and see what happens.

When I did PC repair, I saw this all the time. The motherboard light would shine like it was brand new, but that used about all the juice the power supply had left in it.

Anyone have any advice on replacements? The EVGA G2 650w got a perfect review over on JonnyGuru's site. I'd be heading up to the NJ Microcenter to purchase, as I need something immediately, and that seemed like a great option at $100. I want it as cheap as possible, but I also don't want to buy a load of crap (obviously).

I think you know enough to get a decent one. Cosairs are fine as long as you don't get their economy line. I have also heard good things about EVGA. I would recommend an 80+ of some level. Should run cooler, and therefore last longer (among other advantages).

Thanks for the help guys, it was greatly appreciated. One EVGA G2 650w later, and I'm up and running again.

That is very good to hear. Don't those have like a 10-year warranty? Make sure you register for that (if needed).
