This is kind of off topic but its still hardware related. Does anyone have any experience in take a shuttle computer on an airplane? Is it allowed these days? The computer is in this case. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=371368
The reason I ask is I helped a friend build this in hopes that he could take it on the plane back and forth to school. He hasn?t tried it yet but it would be nice to know if there is anything we could do to make it easier to transport. Thanks for any input you guys might have.

maybe in first class. I hope you can find yourself a 12-14" monitor. I highly doubt you'll have the space, power or the patience of your neighbors that will allow you to do that.

I?m just worried about security and stuff. I think he is going to have a monitor there and at home. But I?m not sure. I mean the thing kinda looks like a bomb. Has anyone transported a computer on a plane lately? If so what kind of security issues did you have?

Even if they let him take it on the plane, it would probably end up in an overhead storage bin. I'm guessing it wouldn't fit under the seat, and I don't think they let you have anything in the isle or on your lap (at least while the plane is taking off/landing).

Should be ok. You need to do a couple of things . . . first check if it meets the overhead compartment criteria.

http://www.delta.com/travel-agency/library/baggage/carry_on/index.jsp

here are some examples of what typical compartment sizes are. . .

Lastly, do some packing on the box of yours. Although for the most part internal pci cards are held together well, they, however, do not handle jostling and such very well. Since PCI graphics cards are getting longer and longer there is little in the way of foundation. Do yourself a favor, pick up some anti static bubble wrap and really cram that stuff in so the cards are immobilized. Otherwise you're going to be crying or cringing everytime the darn plane lands.

Put it in a padded bag and it is a carry on - even a rool-on. Then it goes into the upper compartment. No different that carrying a camera kit or a laptop. It will have to go through X-Ray - that should not hurt it.

You could hand carry it as a "personal item" in lieu of a backpack or handbag. No problems. It is basically a chubby laptop.

I have sent an older computer though my checked baggage before.
It was a old PII based celeron though so if it died I didn't care much.
Made it fine though.
