Yeah, that it is I guess! I remember talking about those slots before, and I then found out that it is somekind of riser-slot. But I confused it with CMR-slot (which is in fact smaller).

what I dont get is why motherboard companies actually outfit their motherboards with amr and cmr and whatnot slots. I mean does anyone here use one of those? or even know anyone who uses one? or for that matter has even seen a card like that?

It's directed at OEM's, not us. Remember, we make a small % of the market.

Very cool all this. I am glad to see that we are not seeing a repeat of the Athlon launch. Although, this just does seem kinda odd. For Chipse makers to be showing off Mobo's and chipsets for a yet to be released CPU. I dunno it just seems wierd. Also, to be quite honest, I am a little suprised to see SiS of all people to be making an eternal frame buffer for the graphics. They shouldn't care about the int videos performance, just price, and I guarantee you that it will cost money to go that route.

One other comment,m I really would like to know y (and again especially SiS) nobody has a single chip CH Chipset solution. It just seems to me that that makes the mosty sense because the NOrht Bridge's job is now decreased to just relaying Memory requests and the AGP controller so y not put them on 1 chip? But anyway, great stuff so far!!! Thanks Anand!!!!

athlon4all,

my guess is that SiS is using the external frame buffer because:

hitting the memory controller on the processor will slow down the processor;
the latencies will make it perform like sh*t

if they didn't use the frame buffer, it would REALLY hurt system performance. they wouldn't want the stigma of producing a board that slows down a fast processor. at least with the frame buffer, the cpu could still run unhampered (though the video performance will still suck, but the people who buy such a board don't really care about video performance....but i'm sure they wouldn't want their 3400+ performing like a 2800+)

my 2 cents
