concern with my laptop

i just got my new dell inspiron 8500 in the mail yesterday


when i have the comptuer on, the bottom in 2 places gets so ridiculously hot that i almost cant keep my hand there


now i know laptops get hot and i know there are cooling options for them from sites like hardwarecooling.com

but my concern is: do laptops get THIS hot.. and is it dangerous? :/

wat processor does ur 8500 have


i have one with the p4 2.2m and it doesnt get tooo hot, i can keep it on my laps for 2-3 hours

its a pIV 2.4 ghz processor

its not "burning" hot per se.... but it gets hot enough for cause for concern

The kind of laptop you have is a "desktop replacement." Desktop processors use more energy and therefore get hotter. I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 "desktop replacement" and that gets very hot as well. I don't think it's anything to worry about. It's just the fact that it uses a bigger processor.

EDIT: I saw that link about cooling right after I posted. Personally I wouldn't get that kind of thing unless it is really bothersome. I don't know if that can actually prolong the life of a laptop...

most lappies get that hot (especially desktop replacements), despite what people say.

well the majority of the time my laptop will be sitting on my dorm room desk,, so that cooling thing cant hurt right


now taking into acccount about how hot these things get... how long can i keep it running before i should give it a break?

Don't worry about the heat unless you are concerned about burning your bodily parts. The laptop is well engineered to have the heat issue worked out. My old P3 laptop runs frying pan hot underneath, yet it has been working fine for nearly 3 years despite being turned on nearly 24 hours a day. People are just too obsessed with having their system run too cool with unnecessary amounts of noise as a consequence. It's not needed!

I just want my freakin' laptop to be quiet! I have an HP ZE4209 and periodically the fan inside will turn on and it's loud as hell. Remember those GF FX sound clips that were going around? THAT's what it sounds like. I hardly ever use the thing and thinking about all that damn noise makes me want to ready to rip it open and check the thermal paste! :|

5100 is actually diff from 8500 the 8500 used the p4-m while the 5100 uses the desktop processor, so it shudnt be that hot

i was considering the 5100 too bt i wanted a bit lighter and more battery life

well dell told me if i was concerned about the heat i could get it exchanged no questions asked within 30 days, so i'll play aruond with this until the 25th day and see how it goes
