Going this week out of San Diego and will visit Mexican waters. I haven't heard of the Cartels doing anything to harm US citizens on the waters, but I must admit I feel vulnerable and helpless (because I am). These boats go out every day I think, but would you go? Usually pirating takes place for ransom purposes or to get money in some other way. Cartels have plenty of ways to make money I would think. Plus, attacking their best customers (US citizens) may not be in their best interest, but theres always the chance for some kind of incident where we get wrapped up in the increased violence down there.

Water's water. If you're concerned about Mexican pirates, don't go to Mexico. It's not like Mexican Pacific is culturally different from US Pacific.

While it is true that Mexican cartels like to take hostages for ransom money, they very rarely do it in the water. I would be more concerned driving a decent car around mexico.

Sea of Cortez? I'd worry more about the hyper-violent man-eating squid in those waters.

If you were going to be fishing along the Rio Grande, I might take some caution, but not so much in the Pacific.

Man, I don't think I've ever heard of an incident of piracy on the seas off the coast here and I've lived in SoCal for 23 years. The Coast Guard patrols these waters and the US Military is based in San Diego. They'd have to be nuts to mess with a fishing boat.

I'd give this exactly zero thought quite frankly.

I know that stretch of water between San Diego and Rosarita down to Ensenada. I think you'll be fine. Have a great trip!

If the Mexican Coast Guard board you boat you need to have fresh Jalapeno bait and they will leave you alone.....

If you are worried, then don't go! You will not have a good time...you will spend all your time looking over your shoulder.

The cartels don't do anything to sport fishermen... I've fished in Mexican waters a lot and there's no danger, private boat. I take it you're on a large sport fishing trip? The only problem was recently they were requiring passports and some visa crap or something. I think they dropped the passport requirement and almost never check people for anything.

I'm certain if they tried to kidnap you, the Mexican Navy is trained to handle such situations with minimal casualties.

I was just down there last weekend for a 1 1/2 day trip for Yellowtail. We saw all of 5 boats while we were out there and none of them were pirates or Mexican Navy...

Turn your phone off when you go. If you jump to towers in Mexico the data rates go through the roof even if you aren't actively using your phone. They juice up the towers so even in US waters you can jump onto their end and have to pay their huge fees.

That is probably the biggest concern.
