The US ground troops who went in to confirm the Zarqawi kill,did a grave mistake for they SHOULD have cut his dead head OFF ,not only as a reminder of his deeds,but to deny a total complete Muslim burial to his relatives,as they praise him as a martyr,and set up a tent for "the brave".The US air force (GOD bless them)should have flatten as well his village,as a doormat and real potential enemy of democracy in the region.
This Lil symbolic gesture,would have carried a long and embedded reminder to all those so called terrorist barbarians,that it will come back to hunt you,wherever you might be.

Not necessarily...the Iraqi insurgency is so splintered into different sectarian and political factions, that they do not have one common voice. Some want nothing more then for the American occupation to end.

There has been several reports indicating that much of the insurgency is willing to talk with the Iraqi government, with the goal of ending the American occupation.

Zarqawi was the wrench in the machine...attempting to incite a civil war and arbitrarily killing the Iraqi people to maintain anti-American sentiments among the Iraqi people, particularly those who are sympathetic to Al Quaida.

However, there are indications that other insurgency groups had no love for Zarqawi, but tolerated his factions' actions against the common American enemy. However, a strong Al Quaida presence in Iraq is the only factor really keeping us there.

With any luck, Zarqawi's death will bolster the confidence of Iraqi security forces and perhaps diminish the influence that Al Quaida has in Iraq...as other insurgent factions are similarly growing weary of this war, it may ultimately lead to negotiations that end the American occupation while ensuring a stable future for Iraq.

Some of your sentiments are in the ballpark but this one is flat out wrong. There's a variety of factors "keeping us" in Iraq. We can certainly hope that Zarqawi's absence will make things better for Iraqis and in theater Americans, as well . . . but it's pretty foolish to bet on it.

Yes my post was a simplification of the dynamics in Iraq, but many of the insurgent groups are not necessarily of the mindset that glorious death against the Americans means martyrdom and virgins awaiting their entrance into heaven...many of these insurgent groups are quite secular, and want nothing more then to quite simply end the occupation and secure their place in the new government structure...these groups we can reason with...Al Quaida, we cannot.

actually, we took more than 30 key players out of the equation in the last 72 hours, and let's just say that the life-expectancy for those rising up through the AQ of Iraq ranks isn't very long... most of Zaqawi's #2 guys have been whacked within weeks of their getting to that position.

you might not know any/all of this because you may not be paying close enough attention... but it's all 100% true. in fact, they took down 17 high-value targets at virtually the same time as Zaqawi.
