The transition is supposed to start at the lowend which means the market that MS dominates, gaming, will still be theirs. No half-selfrespecting gamer is going to buy a MacMini or IMac to replace their PC for gaming even if the Mac had the equivalent game library, which they won't any time soon.

Why not?

If Macs had the same games availabe today, I would be without a doubt using OS X.

If I could OS X on my PC and play my games, I do it without a doubt.

Jobs has just confirmed a Microsoft Office able to run on both. What does that tell you?

Jobs has been demoing OS X 10.4 on a P4 system, so it looks like we're dealing with vanilla x86.

edit: fat binaries confirmed... Xcode 2.1 will compile x86 and PPC universal binaries.

i would love to run a MAC OS, but would never buy a MAC PC to do so .. lush im going to have a dual boot with windows on one to play games on (as alot of applications will take an absolute age to be ported over to OSX) .. and use the OSX for everthign else .. you gota love the eye candy from OSX

They will survive, but they won't be anything like what they are now. They will lose the propriety to their hardware very quickly...
Tas.

sorry but i highly disagree .. i am a windows user and have not had alot of expo with OSX, but i would quite happily learn.

Anyways OSX will not die off or anything the like, OSX was limited because of the compatibility of the machines hardware etc, and now moving to x86 will mean that they will become massive, and be a real shock for MS

My opinion:
Apple will now have to spend more on R&D to get more drivers for every POS piece of hardware in the x86 world. They lose open firmware. Every developer will have to redo every program. Backwards compatibility won't be there losing plenty of their already small market share. People will hack OS X to run on all x86 hardware, so Apple won't have the sales it once did. They won't make money off the hardware, and will fall. Just like NeXT.

Holy crap. Details people, details. There's almost no way that you're going to be able to build your own box, but it'll be interesting how Apple swings, "Hey, buy OUR Pentium 4 3ghz machine for $800 more than a Dell cause it's Apple and OS X!"

You would dump your PC to game on a MacMini? You're not a gamer then. Good luck trying to run any current games on that setup.

Yeah, Apple's current market share just won't cut it. This is a slap in Bill's face.

Let's face it, we all stuck with MS cuz of the cheap hw. Well, at least in my case. Heck, I would love to use OX instead of this old crap. This is great, cheap Dells and OSX. what a combo.

Um... I don't think OSX is going to run on a Dell. They are still using proprietary stuff, just a P4 instead of a PPC.

If they supported generic hardware, I would buy OSX, just to try it if nothing else. Maybe they could shift into software, and leave hardware as it is like with MS.

Microsoft knew about this in advance. They are developing MS Office for OS X x86. These will still be Macs though, and not beigebox PCs. Press release:

Apple to Use Intel Microprocessors Beginning in 2006

WWDC 2005, SAN FRANCISCO?June 6, 2005?At its Worldwide Developer Conference today, Apple® announced plans to deliver models of its Macintosh® computers using Intel® microprocessors by this time next year, and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007. Apple previewed a version of its critically acclaimed operating system, Mac OS® X Tiger, running on an Intel-based Mac® to the over 3,800 developers attending CEO Steve Jobs? keynote address. Apple also announced the availability of a Developer Transition Kit, consisting of an Intel-based Mac development system along with preview versions of Apple?s software, which will allow developers to prepare versions of their applications which will run on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.

?Our goal is to provide our customers with the best personal computers in the world, and looking ahead Intel has the strongest processor roadmap by far,? said Steve Jobs, Apple?s CEO. ?It?s been ten years since our transition to the PowerPC, and we think Intel?s technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next ten years.?

?We are thrilled to have the world?s most innovative personal computer company as a customer,? said Paul Otellini, president and CEO of Intel. ?Apple helped found the PC industry and throughout the years has been known for fresh ideas and new approaches. We look forward to providing advanced chip technologies, and to collaborating on new initiatives, to help Apple continue to deliver innovative products for years to come.?

?We plan to create future versions of Microsoft Office for the Mac that support both PowerPC and Intel processors,? said Roz Ho, general manager of Microsoft?s Macintosh Business Unit. ?We have a strong relationship with Apple and will work closely with them to continue our long tradition of making great applications for a great platform.?

?We think this is a really smart move on Apple?s part and plan to create future versions of our Creative Suite for Macintosh that support both PowerPC and Intel processors,? said Bruce Chizen, CEO of Adobe.

The Developer Transition Kit is available starting today for $999 to all Apple Developer Connection Select and Premier members. Further information for Apple Developer Connection members is available at developer.apple.com. Intel plans to provide industry leading development tools support for Apple later this year, including the Intel C/C++ Compiler for Apple, Intel Fortran Compiler for Apple, Intel Math Kernel Libraries for Apple and Intel Integrated Performance Primitives for Apple.

Intel (www.intel.com), the world?s largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store.

Any info on whether the HFS file system format for MAC hard drives and data CD's/DVD's will still be used?
