Anyone using it with a Compact Flash Client? Which manufacturer and model?

Thanks,

This is not YMMV.
All Radio Shack have both the pc card and the wireless ap on sale.

The setup is not easy, especially if you want to setup WEP security.
Also, if you use winXP, look for an update for the driver.

Why is the Dlink trash and Orinoco so good? Is it the quality of the signal and far you can go with it, if so what difference should one expect?

How about HNW-200? It kinda looks like the intel shown at practicallynetworked. Anyone know if it's any good? I may go back out looking for the Orinoco, since I love my other 4 Orinocos so much. I really want the USB one for driving.

BTW got the USB HNW-200, and spent about 2 hrs trying to get it to work with 2 WinXP boxes, and then just gave up and returned it! Support/drivers are almost non-existant on the Compaq site.

It's YMMV in that they're discontinued items and isn't going to be in every Radio Shack you visit. I checked out 4 and only 1 had any of the Compaq stuff left. The rest had Microsoft wireless products, which I guess replaced the Compaqs.

You're better off CALLING your local RS's, give them the SKU number and ask if they have any in stock.

Unless you like driving all around town.

Using the SKU, as RossMAN mentioned, Radio Shack can check the stock for the entire state that you're located in...and maybe more. I had them do this yesterday and they found 5 units within a 70 mile radius. Friend drove about 50 miles, but picked up two routers and two USB modules. I didn't realize that Radio Shack could do such a nice search. Good Luck!

Yep that's what they usually do for me as well. Since my local RS doesn't have any in stock they checked the ENTIRE Portland metro area instantly and started rambling off which store and how many they had.

Actually, both models have the same sku, so the only way to know for sure is to go there. Besides, calling didn't work for the AP. I called a store and had them hold two, and by the time I drove 45 minutes to get there, one had "disappeared".

You're right about the PC card, there's nothing they/you can do about that.

In the future I would ask the salesperson to reserve the item in your name, get their name and drive over there immediately. In my case the King Road Radio Shack and ONE WAP left, asked them to write Ross on it and save it, when I showed up it was under the counter with a sticky note ROSS attached to it.

Next time I'll make them. I asked him to put my name on it, but he said he wouldn't need to. I called 5 minutes before they closed, and arrived 10 minutes after they opened, so I figured I would be ok. I guess the guy swiped it. Strange thing is it still showed up in the system as in stock.

Swiped literally eh?

I stopped in at a RS in town, they claimed one store in town still had a compaq wireless USB adapter. I drove there and guess what, they had only the empty box. Apparently when they last counted stock, they counted the box without checking inside. Blah.

I ended up getting the sale on the MS one at BB and price matching to staples. Even though I "only" got the $60 price (before rebates) its still a good deal.

Great deal for me. Don't need the wireless aspect of it right now but may in the future. This unit will work just as well simply as a NAT firewall for my dsl connection. Only 2 were left in north Dallas minis the one I bought

Just got back from RS where I bought the PCMCIA 802.11b card (25-3072).

Where do I find if it's a DLINK or Orinoco rebadge? I have looked EVERYWHERE on the box and inside and can't find HNW-100 or WL-110 anywhere.

Orinoco = antenna end (part of pcmcia card that sticks out) is square.

Non-orinoco = antenna end is rounded like a duck bill.

You can find pics of both types all over the web.
