Tipsters pointed us to a peculiar sounding new processor by AMD in the wild, and being distributed by certain OEMs, such as HP. Called AMD FX-670K, the chip is being sold by HP, pre-installed on its Pavilion 500-266ea desktops. Some digging around on specifications available point us to a chip that's essentially "Richland" APU with its integrated GPU disabled. So while it will run on socket FM2 motherboards, you'll have to use graphics cards. "Richland" integrates a dual-module / quad-core CPU component based on AMD's "Piledriver" micro-architec...

so, amx socket is dead, long live fm2/+?

If its OEM, it doesn't mean anything. Or did everyone forgot the OEM-only Socket 939 Semprons, that also used to be in some Hewlett Packet machines?

I would, however, want to see the CPU-only line migrated to FM2. The AM3 platform is simply severely outdated.

"Yes, the first number in the name of an FX process tells you how many cores it has. Unless it has a 3-digit code, in which case it doesn't mean a damn thing." AMD naming systems are getting just as bad as Intel :S And this is a lower number than the 760k, its immediate predecessor! Gah.

Note that this is Piledriver, not Steamroller- we're still waiting for a CPU only Kaveri.

How many feet does AMD's CPU division have? They keep shooting their feet clean off with bad marketing and bad design choices.

Don't get me wrong I really wish AMD was competetive so I could switch back to them but this is the kind of weak stuff that made me switch in the first place. FX in name only, limited cores & PCI-e lanes.

FX 670K? LOL That's has to be a TYPO! I think it's supposed to be a X4 760K. Then again that's Futureshop, it's normal to see some atrocious typos and misleading specs on that site.

Found a CPU-z image of an FX 670K, it's a Richland... /thread.

I wonder if all future APUs with IGP disabled will now be called FX.

http://vr-zone.com/articles/amd-fx-670k-appears-wild/74597.html

Would be a mildly interesting parallel to how the Pentium name has been used. AMD is shifting down a tier so rather than Performance AM and mainstream FM there is now Mainstream FM and entry level AM(1).

If AMD was a little better at planning they could have named FM1->AM4 and FM2->AM4+ then introduced AM1 as FM1. So that while AM4 and AM4+ did not actually offer a higher performing platform over AM3+ it would be a bit less confusing determining which is the current and alive platform.

They seriously need to be offering at least a 3 module part with an enabled IGP or they should just drop the FX name altogether.

At the same time, they need to invest some real cash in software support for HSA for a critical mass of SW. They should be hiring their own developers or offering cash rewards to make commits to open source projects enabling support in things like H264/265 or commonly used open source libraries.

Look at all the AMD Mantle hype... The SW stack is probably where the performance/$ gains are rather than HW side at this point.

I wonder if the holdup isn't just budget, but the fact that most current mobos for the FM socket are for relatively low-wattage parts (in comparison to the higher end AM3 SKUs currently available).

I think it would be doable if they combined it with a new FM3+ chipset that was sold on boards with the proper power delivery to OC 150w-200w CPUs.

Maybe after the next die shrink we'll see more FX chips (I hope).

I want a 4 module part without GPU.
I'd buy an fm2+ mb and cpu if they released one.

I get the feeling we might have to wait for the ddr4 and die shrinks before this true consolidation happens tho

But it'd be better than nothing. Or at least better than an Vishera, right?

this chip? no, it's not better than nothing. it's not available at retail, just system pulls from ebay. and if you need the cores, vishera would destroy it.

if you really want an FM2 chip that doesn't have video, get the 760k. it's the same chip, but with more mhz.

This chip is Richland which has Piledriver cores. Same cores as Vishera.
Take a 4 module Vishera, remove 2 modules, remove L3, add the GPU portion and you have this "new" APU. Nothing to get excited about.

I'm in the opposite boat, to where AMD CPU tech is so meaningless to me at the moment that I'd much rather have 2 module part with 2-3x the GPU so that the APU would at least be worthwhile. Give us a quad channel memory controller and/or a bunch of eDRAM as an L4 cache so that the extra GPU isn't for nothing and we would finally have a product enthusiasts could care about from AMD once again.

Both our positions shouldn't be mutually exclusive from a platform standpoint.
IE: edram/l4 could benefit both camps
Or having more than just a cookie cutter single die would open up more posibilities

so potentially offering:

2 modules + gpu
4 modules without gpu
or
3 or 4 modules + gpu and edram/hbm/whatever

The first two could potentially have similar die area and cost to manufacture, while the 3rd option a potential higher end "extreme" offering.
