Confused about 3d announcements

I keep seeing these announcements about 3d TVs that are amazing and new. Then I read them and they talk about glasses.... what? I remember seeing a review here on Anandtech MANY years ago for a 3d LCD display without needing any glasses at all from these guys:

Am I missing something? If this tech has been around for many years, why would these large companies be making anything with glasses? It also makes me wonder why theirs was never adapted for the mainstream and we are just now seeing big pushes for this kind of tech.

Unlike Blu-ray, I wouldn't jump in as an early adopter.

I believe there are two different 3d technologies. Glasses, and without glasses. For obvious reasons, the non-glasses version is more likely to make it into our home theaters. I'm not really ready to buy into this 3d business yet either, though.

To me, the 3d is more than a gimmick. If done right, I would certainly be on board. I just can't figure out why anyone is pursuing 3d tech with glasses when there are ones where glasses aren't needed.

I wish I could afford to go somewhere to see some of these or try them out. I'm curious at how well it is done. I saw Avatar 3d in the theater with the glasses and that wasn't too bad though it could still use improvement (even with ignoring the glasses). Has anybody seen any of the glasses-less displays first hand? How good are they?
