Confused about my E6750's clock speed

My E6750 on CPU-Z

I'm using a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev 3.3) mobo and Corsair XMS DDR2-800 2GB setup, and this is what my CPU shows to be running at almost all the time (with the voltage going up and down, of course). Now I noticed here and there that the HSF's fan will stop for a moment, then spin up again for a while, then stop, and alternate. Not sure if this has any bearing on what's going on here, but it's got me a bit concerned as to why the CPU runs 600MHz more slowly than it should. Any ideas?

It's called SpeedStep. It's an Intel feature that underclocks your CPU when you're not loading it (therefore saving energy/heat, since lower clockspeeds = less heat = slower spinning CPU fan). If you put something like Orthos on and load your CPU, you will see the clock speed go back to what you set it to. If you're not having any problems with it, leave it on, because it's pretty handy.

On my CPU, speedstep lowers the multiplier from 8x to 6x when my CPU is idle (bringing the CPU down from 3.2ghz to 2.4ghz). I don't see any reason to turn it off.

You know, I figured SpeedStep was active, but I couldn't tell for certain. I'd never seen it live in-action, so I wasn't sure if maybe a setting was off or SS was controlling things. Thanks for affirming my suspicions.

Yup. I know exactly what you mean my friend. Mine does the same thing. I just built this new rig (in my sig) today and it had me very concerned until I read the responses here. LOL.

Question:

Have you messed with the CIA settings yet? I installed the EasyTune 5 application from the Gigabyte motherboard cd, but I haven't changed anything yet.

joe,

I almost have the same exact system you do (see sig). Don't use easy tune. It's not good, buggy, etc. Over clock in bios. You should be able to get 3.2 by changing a couple of numbers in bios.

Its speedstep, unless its unstable id leave it on, its nice to keep your idle temps nice and low.

It even stays clocked down with light usage like browsing the web and playing mp3s or videos. Itll clock itself up when the extra performance is needed.

It's been a long time since i've overclocked. Is there a basic guide for our setups to o/c? What did you use? Also did you mess with your memory timings as well?

I OCed an E4300 using an earlier revision of your board.

Id just shoot for 333x9 because you can keep your memory exactly in spec and at stock timings. You can also try 400x8, but thats pushing it on air.

400x8 is very achievable on air; you're just pushing it if you're on the stock cooler. In fact, I can hit 400x8 fairly easily on my E6420 (I was disappointed I couldn't get past 3.5ghz). OCing is pretty easy; the hard part is making sure everything is stable and tuned perfectly (i.e. lowest voltages, tight memory timings, etc).

So this would explain why I see a 6x multiplier in cpu-z? I have an e6750 in the DS3R as well. I thought cpu-z must be buggy.

/edit: I just viewed the OP's picture and indeed this is exactly what I had been seeing. Out of curiosity, how does one turn speedstop off?

I turned it off through my BIOS, but I have different Mobo and don't know if that makes a difference.

I had the same issue, although after reading the comments here, I may go back and enable it. I've got this thing running pretty cool now though.
