I've recently put together a new system (Win2k Pro, on a 1.2G tbird on an IWILL KK-266R mobo and 712MB ram) mainly in order to create and edit digital video with my new digicam. I've been relatively happy with its performance in almost anything I throw at it, despite what it's done to my bank account. However, there is one recurring problem that no amount of troubleshooting seems to be able to solve and I was hoping someone could give me some insight.
Basically the entire system slows down to almost a standstill for a couple of minutes. Task manager shows that CPU load remains normal, but the system is obviously caught in some loop or procedure that makes it almost totally unresponsive for a few minutes. Then it finishes whatever it was doing and everything returns to normal again. This problem ONLY happens when I play a divx movie or (Goddammit!) while I am capturing DV video from my digicam. There doesn't seem to be any particular trigger in the video sequence that causes this to happen. And it doesn't happen all the time, only about 50%. Sometimes, also win2k starts up very slowly but I'm not sure if this is related.
It didn't used to do this before my latest upgrade and reinstallation of win2k. The hardware additions I made in this upgrade include a pioneer 106s DVD player, a 40GB IBM 60GXP drive (now in RAID 0 with my old 20GB fujitsu) and 512MB of some new ram. I have eliminated the ram chips from the equation so I am pretty sure it's either the drive or RAID setup or the dvd that's the cause of this. Or perhaps it's the video card (a radeon LE) or its drivers since it only happens with movie playback and capture.
Other components include plextor 40/16/10, 3com ethernet, generic firewire card.
If anyone can help me, please let me know. Please convince me that all this money for easy video editing wasn't put to waste.
