That would be a purely humanitarian mission. Nothing more in it for us. No oil. So it won't happen.

Funny you should mention this. France has been doing just that in Liberia(IIRC...in that general part of Africa).

Survivors of a massacre in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have told UN human rights investigators that nearly 1,000 civilians were killed last Thursday on the eve of talks to bring peace to the war-ravaged Ituri district.

Why you saying Congo next? The UN is there already. Isn't that whatyou want? Or does the UN just a failure.

Asking the UN for help with anything is like asking Steven Segal to give you acting lessons. It might seem like a good idea at the time, but in the end you'll be wondering what sort of brain damage got you to even bother asking. The UN has been 100% ineffective in ever accomplishing anything. They're a little like the Keystone Kops. They run around and look like they're busy as hell, but nothing ever gets done. This war is the beginning of the end for the almighty United Nations. They could not enforce the resolutions passed against Iraq 12 years ago. Iraq refused to comply, the UN caved. The UN refused to back the war even though it's justified by their own resolutions. They decided on their own that the resolutions were not worth the paper they're printed on. They could not stop us from enforcing them even though France and Russia threw hissy fits. Now North Korea is doing the same. The UN will debate, NK will refuse to comply and the UN will do nothing. It's over for the concept of running the world by committee. The strong decide what's happening. That's how it always has been, that's how it always will be. C'mon, who on earth cares what Burkina Faso thinks about the war or our need to protect ourselves from murderous thugs?

You think we're going over to the Congo? I don't. I'll take your rig off your hands.

the UN peace-keeping mission in Congo
Sounds like they're doing a bang-up job so far.

Yes, the entry "Congo '97-present" should look quite fetching between "Cambodia '75-9" and "Czechoslovakia '68" on an alphabetical list of UN accomplishments...yet another quality addition to the UN's resume...

What did we get from Haiti for restoring a democratically elected leader?
