We had a similar buildup of outrageous right wing rhetoric, then Timothy McVeigh blew up the Federal building in Oklahoma city. Kind of tamped things down for a few years.
Lately we've had Bill O'Reilly railing about the abortion doctor, who was later shot.
And Palin with her target map, and talking about reloading. And now someone on Palin's map is shot. Right wingers in leadership positions need to watch their language, because some of their supporters are dangerously unhinged, and words have consequences.

What about the crazy environmentalist guy that shut down the Discovery channel and held hostages?

What about the several bombings/attempted bombings of recruiting centers after years of anti-military rhetoric from the left?

Left wingers in leadership positions need to watch their language, because some of their supporters are dangerously unhinged, and words have consequences.

Please. Quite a few of us are upset. I have said my piece and am leaving the thread for a bit as the partisan crap is sickening, no need to make yourself ill over a forum and a few dolts that inhabit it.

For simply disagreeing with their policy? No.

When your life is negatively affected in some way by the enforcement of a policy? Yeah it's justified to the person who's life has been impacted negatively.

I'm not taking sides here, just saying what it is. And obviously this isn't even the case here. From the info so far, the guy was just a random nut and probably just went after the most publically accessible political figure he could.

I enjoy muscle cars and powerful engines for example. With the popularity of "green" politics and hybrids, fuel economy standards, demonizing gas guzzlers, etc, there is a very real potential that there will be future political action to ban or make it prohibitive to own or drive the types of vehicles and hobby I enjoy.

While I wouldn't go out of my way to actively pursue a political figure, I would choose to ignore such policies that attempt to deprive me of my property and attempt to just live my life and go about my business and hope that I'm left alone. But I would make enforcement impossible by defending myself and my property from anyone who would attempt to assault me or confiscate my "forbidden" property.

I'm just saying politics isn't just something we watch on TV for fun. Decisions are made that have a real phsyical effects on people's lives, and it's understandably going to upset people or groups of people.

That does not has to be the case.
For example, friends of mine both have a gass guzzling car which is their hobby. I forgot what model but both are American brand , huge at least 20 years old and just beautiful. One is around 350 horsepower , the other over 500 horsepowers. The difference is that both do not drive every day in these cars because it does not make any sense to do so. The car is large and streets are not always build for these kind of cars. They both have north of 39 mpg high efficiency cars as everyday use cars as well. Saves them more money to do their hobby too. And occasionally they would bring their cars to work just for fun to drive and to show or go to some meeting.

The tax legislations here where i live are indeed to favour efficient cars, but that does not mean that you are not allowed to have a car that is not efficient or modern. Afcourse i understand your fears that where you live, the laws will be a little more extreme.

EDIT:
I remember one of the cars is a souped up dodge charger.

I'll give you an example. I enjoy muscle cars and powerful engines. With the popularity of "green" politics and hybrids, fuel economy standards, demonizing gas guzzlers, gas prices, oil dependence, etc, there is a very real potential that there will be future political action to ban or make it prohibitive to own or drive the types of vehicles and hobby I enjoy. Whether it's banning them outright, or taxing them so as to make it prohibitive, it affects my life in a real and physical way that I do not approve of.

While I wouldn't go out of my way to actively pursue a political figure, I would choose to ignore such policies that attempt to deprive me of my property and attempt to just live my life and go about my business and hope that I'm left alone. But if and when confronted, as a last resort, I would make enforcement impossible by defending myself and my property from anyone who would attempt to assault me or confiscate my "forbidden" property.

I'm just saying politics isn't just something we watch on TV for fun. Decisions are made that have a real physical effects on people's lives, and it's understandably going to upset people or groups of people.

Yeah, but how likely is it that a tree-hugger, emboldened by the rhetoric from left-wing media is going to shoot you for driving a gas guzzler?

One perfect outcome of this tragedy would be if the shooter tells the news media that Palin was his inspiration.

Going in the sig, so your sickness won't be forgotten. You and LemonLaw now have something in common.

You guys really are fucking just as insane as the gunman IMHO. Drawing parallels between Sarah's campaign comments and the motives of this wacko is beyond stupid.

Considering that other then this guy's favorite reading selection and implied view of the US and its flag (If the youtube page is his) then it is completely retard to draw some conclusion that this idiot was someone how influenced by Sarah Palin anymore then the band Drowning Pool influenced him with ideas to kill people.

Maybe just maybe this guy didn't need any motivation to actually kill someone outside of the wacko motivation he found in his own head.

Maybe YOU ought to damn well better inform yourself. Giffords own words on this were prescient and, in retrospect, chilling:

Giffords herself has drawn the ire of the right, especially for her support of the health care bill from politicians like Sarah Palin.

Her Tucson office was vandalized a few hours after the House vote to approve the health care law in March, with someone either kicking or shooting out a glass door and window. In an interview after the vandalism, Giffords referred to the animosity against her by conservatives. Palin listed Giffords' seat as one of the top "targets" in the midterm elections because of the lawmakers' support for the health care law.

"For example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," Giffords said in an interview with MSNBC.
Reports of death threats, vandalism and harassment have Democrats on edge as they’re preparing to head home for their spring recess. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., who is one of the Democratic leaders targeted, discusses.

The video has already been posted here and commented on, but, please, listen to it yourself. It is now the bottom one of four listed.

Here, again, is an excerpt of her interview:

Newsperson: "Are you afraid? Are you fearful today?"

Giffords: (Non-hysterically downplaying the attack on her office.) "You know, I'm not. We've had hundreds and hundreds of protestors over the course of the last several months. Our office corner has become an area where the Tea Party congregates and the rhetoric has become incredibly heated -- not just the calls but the emails, the slurs . . . things have gotten really spun out."

I wonder where the shooter acquired this weapon. I'm going to guess, but not assume, that he 'borrowed' it from a relative or stole it outright.

So the Unibomber was a fluke?

The bombings, acts arsons and targeting for physical violence of staff working by animal rights activist who who target scientific labs which use animals for testing is also not relevant in this train of though of yours?

I could add some more examples if you like but damn why should I was the effort IMHO.

I do, however I am guided by what is right, not necessarily what is law.

I offer this perspective:

Persecution of blacks and jews were both justified under law.

When law is twisted in such a way to violate the life, liberty, and property of the individual, not only do I not believe in it, I abhor it.

The root purpose of law and order is to *protect* life, liberty, and property, not take it away.

lol, ya, I'm sure that can somehow apply to this situation...

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot In Arizona

The shooting comes amid a highly charged political environment that has seen several dangerous threats against lawmakers but nothing that reached the point of actual violence.

Police say the shooter was in custody, and was identified by people familiar with the investigation as Jared Loughner, 22

Loughner described inventing a new U.S. currency and complained about the illiteracy rate among people living in Giffords' congressional district in Arizona.

Not surprised at all that raged Republicans start shooting and killing Democrats.

Well, both are true. Politicians, particularly those on a national or global stage, SHOULD be careful about rhetoric and inciting hate or blind partisan lock-step. The best thing to inspire is intelligent independent thought and the ideals of honor, self-respect, and respect for others. Sadly our leaders on both the left and the right fail us consistently on these points. I'd argue you'd have to travel back to the days of Eisenhower and Kennedy to find anything really close to that.

I threw out a few names in my first post, sarah palin being one of them, sort of as a half-joke - caricature of what would be happening here and other places as far as the usual blame game anytime incidents like this happen...and they really are blaming sarah palin! LOL.

So pathetic but very predictable.

It was merely an example of something down to Earth, real and tangible, that affects people. Politicians don't just say things because people like to hear them argue. These things become laws, that depending on the individual, may infringe on your life in a real and meaningful way. It could be anything.

Since when is burning petrochemicals at an incredible rate to make a vehicle go as fast as it can, a human right?

The actions of this insane person are the ultimate responsibility of the shooter alone. I agree that blaming others directly is counterproductive and unintelligent. It remains a valid point that stirring up unfounded conspiracy theory and fear mongering is a dangerous game to play by members of the political arena, be they politicians or media.

Left wingers in leadership positions need to watch their language, because some of their supporters are dangerously unhinged, and words have consequences.

Who? Please provide quotes from leadership positions:

A few examples such as these? We are not even getting into the real hate-mongers who endlessly try to jump the Limbaugh shark for ratings feeding the hate cult.

They're Destroying America!

They Want to End Your Liberty!

Health Care Reform is the End of America!

Rush Limbaugh: "I tell people don't kill all the liberals. Leave enough so we can have two on every campus – living fossils – so we will never forget what these people stood for."

Senator Phil Gramm: "We're going to keep building the party until we're hunting Democrats with dogs."

Rep. James Hansen on Bill Clinton: Get rid of the guy. Impreach him, censure him, assassinate him."

John Derbyshire intimated in the National Review that because Chelsea Clinton had "the taint," she should "be killed."

Ann Coulter: "We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too."

Ann Coulter: "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building."

Bill O'Reilly: "ll those clowns over at the liberal radio network, we could incarcerate them immediately. Will you have that done, please? Send over the FBI and just put them in chains."

Clear Channel radio host Glenn Beck said he was "thinking about killing Michael Moore" and pondered whether "I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it," before concluding: "No, I think I could. I think he could be looking me in the eye, you know, and I could just be choking the life out -- is this wrong?"
