What about mass shooting events ? How often do we read about those ?

100 shots, 28 dead, one wounded. I don't know what can be done to change that, seems worth discussing though.

I agree that guns aren't the biggest problem, if I could change one thing it would be to take away the stigma of getting help for emotional and/or mental health issues.

But I don't see any reason why making better training, and more thorough mental health screening, required for gun ownership, takes away any rights.

Agreed on last statement. The problem is the government control will undoubtedly go beyond that if unchecked.

I'm not disagreeing about having stricter measures for determining who should be allowed to own a gun. I'm just upset when people take a tragedy and have this immediate knee-jerk emotional response that we need to ban the tools used to perpetrate some atrocity rather than taking steps to address the underlying issue. We've had legal gun ownership in this country for hundreds of years; why are school shootings becoming a more common occurrence over the last 20 years than they were for the first 215 years of our country?

Better enforcement of the no crazy people can own guns laws would be a start. Random searches and seizures on houses with people that aren't allowed to own guns. Random gun searches of known felons houses and mental patients etc.

Random searches and seizures isn't something the Fourth Amendment would allow and again raises red flags IMO. The border patrol already does this 50 miles within the border; where does it stop? This practice is basically illegal and when confronted with the legality of the issue they generally don't press. When it's gone to court it's been deemed unconstitutional.

Yea, I know, if you haven't done anything wrong what's there to worry about? That's not the point. It's a violation of basic American rights...that's what to worry about.

Columbine was long before that time, and occurred while the AWB was in place. The weapons used today (two semi-automatic pistols) would have been perfectly legal under the AWB (though admittedly the AWB included restrictions on magazine size which MIGHT have helped).

The ban did not prevent you from buy a pre-ban or post ban rifle. It also didn't really prevent you from buying high capacity magazines and using them in your post ban firearm...The ban was cosmetic and it's existence and expiration has nothing to do with these mass shootings.

The report just says they were legally purchased - it doesn't mention by whom. I would guess that they belong to a family or friend.

How so?

The ban did nothing. The only thing it prevented was new large magazines from being sold. You could still buy used ones.

Other than that, the assult weapon ban did nothing.

If they reenact the same laws. People will go out and buy all the large magazines they can afford, and sell them after the law is in effect for a huge profit. They will still be available, the only difference: People will buy more and make a profit from it.

I have a 90 or 100 round magazine for my AR-15. One... That a friend gave me when I bought my AR-15 (again when the assult ban was in effect) so I'd have one. I never had any interest in having more, but since this is coming up. I will. I will likely buy a few hundred so I can sell on ebay after the law goes into effect.

For your second statement; what the hell are you talking about. I'd love to actually have our court system enforce stricter laws for criminals whether they be drunk drivers or someone who commits murder with any weapons...gun or otherwise. We could start by executing shitheads that don't actually kill themselves after such horrible acts with their own gun.
