Potentially, though he would have to show that they published his identity either knowing it was false, or with reckless disregard for its truth or falsity.

Since (we are still being told), the shooter was a 24-year-old from Newtown, CT, now living in NJ, and the Ryan Lanza whose Facebook profile was used to grab that photo is also a 24-year-old named Ryan Lanza, originially from Newtown, CT but now living in NJ, I don't really consider it reckless disregard to have assumed they were one and the same. It's also possible the news identified the right Ryan Lanza and the person claiming not to be the shooter is some third party perpetuating a hoax.

Because the real problem with gun violence in the United States comes from minorities in gangs shooting each other. You can't mention that because it's racist to do so. IIRC there's something like 10,000 gun homicides in the US every year, which means that about 30 people are getting shot every day, on average. A shooting like this, while tragic, is a drop in the bucket.

So in order to further their agenda, they have to latch on to events like this where the shooter is white, or looks white enough to pass as one. Bonus points if he uses an "assault weapon" which are used in a statistically insignificant amount of crimes.
