Connecting 2 machines via usb

i am sure i posted this earlier, so sorry if this is a repeat.

I want to know if I can cut 2 usb extension cables and attach the males (using the color coded wires) so that I can make a connection between 2 laptops?

I am talking about the flat wide usb when I say male.

No you can't. USB is always hub-to-device, connecting two computers would be a hub-to-hub connection. Not Working.

There are "USB nullmodem" cables which essentially are a twin set of USB-Ethernet devices in one tiny box, with cables coming out both ends. These connect to two computers and let you network them.

Of course you'll get the same thing much cheaper and much more straightforward if you use plain ethernet.

To add to what others have said, USB is NOT a peer-to-peer service. It is a master-slave interface. But when you hook up two computers together, both of which want to be the master, bad things happen.

They DO make USB-to-USB cables for this purpose, but there is a lump of electronics in the middle. And I think that you need to load special drivers.
