Hi

I am thinking about buying a 24 " LCD Monitor (Specifically the Dell S2409W 24 " Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor).

The monitor has an HDMI Input.

My question is, if I connect a DVD Player (With an HDMI Output) to this monitor, will it work properly?

p.s. I know that DVD's can be played via a connected computer but I want to avoid that.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

Another query...given the same video source is played through a HDMI connections, is the quality of an LCD TV different than that of a LCD Monitor?

That is entirely up to the quality of the TV vs. Monitor. Out of the box, most monitors are geared toward viewing text, while TVs are meant for video and motion.

Also, as a rule of thumb, monitors have a smaller dot pitch because they are typically viewed from a shorter distance, but it is not always true.

The other thing to remember is that most monitors do not have speakers so you will need some way for sound to work.

nataku00: Have got additional sound system, so not a problem.

Should be okay, but understand the limits of a TN monitor. (FYI, I am personally biased against TN panels, so it might be good to get a second opinion)

Poor viewing angles: You will need to be sitting directly in front of the monitor, and definitely not above or below.
Poor blacks: Even a properly calibrated TN monitor suffers from having no deep blacks. Shadows or dark scenes will blend together.

Upsides

Great response times: No smearing or ghosting (but this issue has mostly been solved with any panel)
Low price: Always a good thing.

As long as it is just you watching it, go for it. If others will be watching it too, that will offset the angles and the screen will look funny depending on the angle. Also, Dell usually has good build quality, but I'd check some reviews before I'd commit.

If you're willing to go a bit lower in size and resolution, the 2209WA seems like a champ. E-IPS panel for ~$250 w/ coupons. Unbeatable price. I paid $400 for my 2005wfp back in '05.

I hear that it is a great monitor. I'm sure you would be very happy. HardOCP forums have a great thread about it.

U2410

I'm sure it's a good read if your planning on buying it.

A U2410 for just DVD playback is a waste, IMO. Play it on your computer and then use the U2410 for other things, because a $600 H-IPS monitor isn't going to do any justice if you're going to be using it for just DVD playback.

For sound, a Dell Sound Bar may be appropriate, but they don't have the best sound quality. And remember, DVD playback is at 480p, so upscaled to 1920 x 1200 isn't going to look as great as HD content on that.
