Ahh, I see at least your model does support component out:

Note that isn't actually a S-video plug though, as a S-video plug only has four pin holes like shown here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-Video

Try to plug your addapter into an actual S-video output like that on a cable box or such, and you'll find it simply doesn't fit.

Anyway tjmudder, your laptop might support compont out with the right addapter as well, which would be cheaper and possibly better quality than using a converter. Both should be fine for running standard HDTV resolutions like 720p though.

So what kind of adapter would this be? I actually bought a vga to component cable because I swear I read that someone said that they got that to work with their dell laptop, but I quickly found out that those don't work because VGA outputs RGB and not Y,Pb,Pr. Good thing I only paid $4 for it.

If your laptop supports a component adapter, Dell would be able to tell you which one.

I always thought S-video carried a lower quality signal and really couldn't create a good HD signal but I've been been wrong before.
An S-video connection won't pass HD at all, just 480i. But again, the plugs being discussed here aren't actually S-video plugs, they are the same shape but have more pins to support component and such.
