Connecting Logitech Z-640 Speakers to a laptop?

My friend requested speakers for her laptop, for her b-day. I am thinking of these for the best bang for the buck.

But can you connect them to a single audio out port, that you would find on an IBM thinkpad?

I realize that: the laptop does not have a 5.1 card, and the speakers won't sound as good.

I personally bought some Monsoon Planar Media 14s as a cheaper alternative to the klipsch. They're superb for music, so good that they'll make any mp3s under 192 quality sound like crap, and handle dvds and gaming quite well. The only downside to the latter 2 is that they are flat panel speakers and therefore have essentially no bass, all of that is powered by a giant subwoofer, and low voices and tones are sometimes slightly unclear.

At about half the price of the klipsch they are a steal.

heck no. i'm just giving the man a suggestion. actually i was thinking 680s, not 640s, because i'm illiterate or something. i'm still sticking with 2.1s being the best, but yeah i see the price difference now.

Headphones are the best bet for a laptop.

If the laptop has stereo out, then the center, subwoofer, and rear speakers will do nothing. And I don't know that there's any laptops with surround-sound outputs, other than an SPDIF connector maybe. And constantly packing up and moving the speakers will be unpleasant - lots of wires to deal with.
A 2.1 system would do nicely, as has been suggested.
