HI all,

I just got a Gigabye 5600 XT card, which comes with 3 x Displayport 1.4 and 1 x HDMI 2.0b ports. No DVI.

I currently connect two devices to the monitor: desktop via dual-link DVI cable and work laptop via Displayport.

The sole DP port on the U3011 is taken up by the work laptop already. That leaves only the DVI-D and HDMI 1.3a ports on the monitor.
What would be the best way to connect the desktop to the U3011? Can I simply get a DP->>DVI dongle or a DP->DVI (dual-link) cable? Or will straight up HDMI connection work?

Thanks.

If you want to drive it at native resolution (which you should absolutely want) you will need a DP to DL DVI adapter. HDMI will work but you won't get above 1920x1200 @ 60hz as there is only one TMDS link in HDMI and you need two to drive 2560x1600 @ 60hz.

Specifically, I'd get this:

Thanks, all. I've been scratching my head on this as I don't want to spend much money on what is otherwise a mundane process (connecting to a monitor). There are adapters out there but few make it clear if they will do above 1080p resolution.

I just got a DP to dual-link DVI cable off for ~$5. I'll keep you updated.

edit: @VirtualLarry, it's my understanding that HDMI typically won't do resolutions above 1080p. This is even more likely with the older HDMI version on my monitor.

HDMI and DVI (single link) will both do up to 1920x1200 @ 60hz with reduced blanking. You will not get better without an active adapter to translate from DP to dual-link DVI (dual TMDS).

Nvidia RTX -> DP port -> adapter -> DVI-D cable -> DVID port on u3011
No issues running 2560x1600 @60hz with Dell u3011

Link to adapter below.

Monoprice DisplayPort 1.2a to DVI Active Adapter, Black (12784)
Currently $16.48 on Amazon (likely can get direct from Monoprice as well if the price is better)

NOTE: Take a look at the comments, there are some caveats but for u3011 this will work.

"Confirmed to work at 2560x1600 for Dell u3011. Description below thanks to Neil's review at Monoprice for why this works for some and not others:

"This adapter is designed around a Parade Tech PS170 Active Displayport to HDMI/DVI conversion chip. A little digging around on the Internet and I found a datasheet for this chip which clearly state that this chip only has enough channels for SINGLE LINK output. So how did some people got it to work? well it appears that there is an optional specs of DVI that allows for single link speed of 340MHZ which is essentially double the rate of normal DVI, some monitors support this, such as Dell U2711 & U3011 and Philips 288p6. Monitors with dual-link DVI-D input that requires two 165MHZ link signal will not get resolution higher than 1080P!!! Unfortunately all active adapters that I can find on the market uses this same chip design since they are most likely made in the same factory in China, which mean that if you have a monitor that require normal speed dual-link DVI you might as well get the $80 adapter. PROS: Active adapter for cheap CONS: NOT DUAL LINK!" "
