Connecting two routers

I'm trying to share my internet connection and LAN using two routers.

Router1: D-link (not wireless) - primary router
Router2: Netgear MR814 (wireless) - secondary router

Goal: Connect cable modem to the D-link and use its LAN for the wired computers. Then, use the Netgear for wireless and to connect another wired computer.

Problem: Need to figure out how to see the internet from the Netgear router. The LAN lights do not light up where I have the routers connected via a cable.

Right now I have a crossover cable connecting wired LAN ports 1 and the Netgear and 3 on the D-link (do I need the crossover cable, or only a regular?).

I'm thinking that I need 3 LAN IP's on the Netgear: wireless computer, wired computer, and link between the routers. Is that correct?

I disabled DHCP on the Netgear and assigned IP addresses out of the range of the D-link's range. I set up the Netgear router IP as a DMZ host.

So does anyone know what settings I need to change to get the Netgear to see the internet?

I've got a similar setup, though it sounds like you have more routing than you need. My recommendation is use your wired router to connect to your broadband, then use your wireless router in Access Point mode, which basically has it functioning as a wired/wireless switch. This is what I did and its been rock-solid since I installed it. Just let your primary router assign IP's or static IP's or however you have it set up.

broadband -> router -> wired lan & access point -> more wireless and wired connections

Plug the D-Link router into a LAN port of the Netgear router, not to the WAN port. Leave the WAN port open on the second router. Also, no need for any DMZ settings anywhere...

plug the main port (WAN) of the wireless router, into the normal side (LAN) of the DLINK. thats all you need to do. if the lights dont come on, then switch the cable type until they do.

you may also need to turn off the wireless routers DHCP server and NAT routing if it has those.

Nope, you want to leave the WAN port of the second router open, you really only want to use the switch and wireless capability. See Jack's link, since you apparently didn't believe my post.

BTW, I don't know how you turn off NAT on any common SOHO router, other than simply not using it by leaving the WAN port open.

Thanks for the help - I will try this tomorrow.

So basically I don't have to do anything - just disable DHCP on the Netgear, connect LAN to LAN via cable until the lights come on, and then the Dlink should just assign IPs to the computers conecting via the wireless access point?

The only thing that worries me is that I have a LAN to LAN connection already, but no link (I have some bogus address assigened to me). We'll see what happens when I replace the crossover cable with a regular cable.

Yep, I think that picture is doing what I was saying. Note that the WAN on the second router is empty. You may need a crossover cable between the routers if neither of them have autosensing ports.

I think it was th eautosensing ports that was screwing things up. A regular cable makes everything work great!
