What kind of setup we talking here?

Crimp connectors work great, but you may be able to get away with using plain ol' wire nuts.

I'm just making a diy aux jack for my car's stock head unit. The stock head unit has an input in the back for an aux jack. I was able to buy the connector that plugs into the head unit's input. It has four wires (left, right, ground, not sure what the fourth wire is for). I bought a RCA left / right to 1/8" miniplug jack cable to connect to this four wire connector. The person I bought the connector from left a little bit of each of the four wires attached to the connector so that I could easily attach this new 1/8" miniplug jack to it.

Soldering (if done correctly) is the best and is more permanent. Crimp connectors are fine too. Use whatever way is more convenient. You will not notice a difference in sound quality.

Pretty much solder it if its meant to be permanent. If you think you may want to attach/detach it ever/often go crimp.

If you want to join two wire and do it without making a bulge in the connection or shortening the wires, use a western union splice.

so named for the old days when a telegraph wire would break and you didn't have extra wire to put it back together and needed a strong connection

Yeah, but a little hard for stranded wire
