Connection Problem

I have two computers both running Windows 7 Ultimate. They were communicating with each other flawlessly and I could transfer files between them with no problems. I use one for a backup of the other. Suddenly without any changes to them, the transfer rate dropped drastically. It would have taken over 4 hours to transfer 700meg of data. I use one for a backup of the other. Thinking it might have been a problem with the old Linksys WRT54G router, I purchased a ZyXEL GS105B switch. I have both computers connected to the switch and then from the switch to the router and from the router to the DSL modem. Both computers can connect to the internet and also to a networked printer with no problem. They just cannot connect to each other. The Linksys is running the latest Tomato update and I think this is where the problem is. Is there something I’m missing or need to setup?

just guess's but....

maybe not the routers fault, maybe its a setting on w7(IDK i dont have 7) maybe u reached a certain type of file that it had to scan for virus security related issues cause of some defaut network setting on one or both of your computers? maybe you ran out of space on the backup computer? I forget what the percentage rule was but if you get low enough even if u dont totally run out of space ur performance will come to a halt.

i never used a switch either but i think thats the only issue you have right now, is because a switch is Not a router. the switch will only allow you to Split the Wan connection, Not allow your computers to talk to each other.

Hardware does not change if you don't change it.

Computer Soft content on the hard drive (especially when related to Internet/Networking) constantly changes without the user intentionally Changing anything.

I.e., given your story, leave your hardware alone and re-work/check the Network configuration of both computers.

Also check in general what is going on Processed and Traffic-wise.

I'll check that this weekend. Both systems have static IP's and I did try streaming a movie from one to the other before the switch was in place and there was no problem there. If I take the switch out of the mix they reconnect without any problem. There is plenty of disk space and both systems were built less than a year ago. Thanks
