Connectivity problems with OfficeJet 7410

Hello all,
I have been having an issue with an HP OfficeJet 7410 printer over the past few weeks and no one (from HP or Linksys support anyway) has any answers.

My setup:
Toshiba notebook with internal wireless
Windows XP Home w/ SP2
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
HP OfficeJet 7410
- OfficeJet is connected to the router with a Cat5e cable rather then using the built-in wireless capabilities.

Problem:
I can ping the printer via the command prompt with no packet loss or errors. However, the HP setup software does not detect _any_ printer connected to the network. I have also tried manually entering the IP address during setup, but it still cannot be detected. I have disabled all security features such as the XP firewall and anti-virus software.

Yesterday an HP technical said it was due to the router and I needed a firmware upgrade, but it did not resolve the problem. I also contacted Linksys support and was told I needed to contact HP again or Microsoft.
-

A couple months ago I had successfully connected and installed the printer using the setup above. However, there were constant problems with connection issues. Many times the built-in card readers could not be accessed (as if it were offline) and problems using the scanning features.

Office Depot exchanged this printer twice and the problems still persisted. I tried using a USB connection and everything worked fine, however, I would really like to connect using a Cat5 cable to the router rather then another cord to the notebook.

Thanks for reading this long winded post! If anyone has an idea I would be truly grateful!

Thanks,
Luke

Did you try on this recent setup to use the USB port?
What I am thinking is that if not, try it now as a troubleshoot and post the result.

Have you checked the obvious - enable printer/file sharing?

Thanks for the reply. Here is what I did...

A few weeks ago the printer was "working" using Ethernet, but was still having problems. Random connectivity issues, etc, until everything stopped working except for printing.

OfficeDepot gave me a replacement and I connected it using a USB cable (without reinstalling the software). Worked perfectly. I reinstalled the HP software yesterday connected through USB and it was flawless.

As for file sharing, I am not sure I follow?

Thanks!

In control panel,
Network connections

check that the printer/file sharing for Microsoft Networks is ticked.
If it was working, it should have been ticked, but no harm in looking.

I tried contacting HP again with no luck in resolving this issue. Anyone? I am open to any suggestions that might work at the moment. :-/

Is there a reason why you are not using it via "wireless"

I have mine setup with WPA and I love it!

I had tried that previously, but for some reason only the Printer feature would work on the network (you could not scan or use the built-in memory readers).

I would actually prefer wireless since that was the main reason for buying the 7410.

There are 3 computers in my network and I ran a full installation of the software in each computer that way all the functions of the printer would be available.

Are you sharing the printer?

Or does it show as a Local printer in each computer?

with their newer printers you are supposed to be able to use memory cards / scanner over the wireless. This should include yours, you may want to send it to hp for replacement(or take it back to the store if that's still an option)

Thanks for the replies. The printer was purchased at OfficeDepot, and they've already replaced it three times. I am using the Linksys Wireless-G router WRT54G, if that matters.

It is not shared with any other computers, just using it with the notebook.

that sucks... I've set up a 2710 over wireless, the only problem I can remember is that I needed to download the latest drivers from HP's website to get it the install working. (It should be a several hundred mb file if i remember)

If still no help call HP back and ask for their escalation line, that'll get you to someone in the US that you can actually understand.

Do you have a firewall installed other than XP's?

I have norton internet security, and when I installed the software, it asked me to disable all of norton in order for the setup to detect the printer.

Try installing the software again, full installation. Disable the windows firewall and see how that goes. Enable the firewall after the installation is complete and it will hopefully prompt you for access authorization.

You can also try running the home network wizard (control panel, network connections, wizard) Just choose the setup that best describes your "setup" (usually "other" my computer connects to the internet through a router or hub, other computers do too)
Make sure printer sharing is enabled.

The only firewall (other then the router of course), is the XP firewall which I have disabled. I also disabled AVG and other programs that I thought may have been interferring.

The DSL/Internet is working without any problems, so I am a bit reluctant in changing any settings that may affect it.

Thanks for the replies!
