Conroe is not out yet, my friend, so making recommendations about it would be irresposible, to say the least. If you want to know which will be the best overclocker I'd suggest waiting a bit after launch (a week or two, if not more) to see the trends with the different parts. Personally, I think an Allendale will be the only Conroe I'll buy (in the short term, anyway) since they're pretty cheap and my uses don't rely on cache too heavily. The problem will be finding decent overclocking motherboards...

I'll second Furen's opinion. Even more so considering the solid rig you have running in your signature.
But if you think you must move up to a dual core, getting a Socket 939 X2 3800+ 2-3 weeks from now and overclocking it might be the best upgrade option for you (no need for new motherboard/RAM).

The overall picture from the Engineering Sample chips floating around is pretty impressive. Take my opinion with a pinch of salt: overclocking Conroes shouldn't be any different from overclocking Opterons. Big gains - even on air - is what everyone and their mother is saying.

Most of the people here are interested in the Conroe E6600 (2.4 GHz, 4MB L2) chip. Should sell around $350 at release, I think.
Bottom line is: if this is for gaming primarily, the price of CPU+RAM+MOBO may end up running a little too expensive for returns that won't be too evident (although I believe FEAR & Oblivion show great improvements on Conroe).

Wait, my friend, Wait. July 15th shall clear up most doubts.

Good point. Might be worthwhile to wait for some motherboard reviews, or wait for new motherboards that can fully take adavantage of Conroe's potential.

Hiyo!

I'm pretty sure you heard about the Conroe running at 5GHz on water-cooling (or was it nitrogen?) and completing SuperPi in 10 seconds...

5ghz on water? I think not... They have gotten it to 4ghz on air. 5ghz I would think you'd need phase. Though I guess water might work. I think their are only like 3 people give or take who have gotten to 5ghz...

Some people have gotten 2000 FSB(world record). Most new mobos 955 /975 /965 will easly surpport at least 1333 FSB.

Yeah, but if you get a 1.86GHz part and get to FSB1600 you "only" hit 2.8GHz, that's not THAT impressive, and 400MHz FSB is being generous (I think) without doing anything crazy to the chipset.

Articles about overclocking Conroe engineering samples on a small selection of motherboards that actually support Conroe (albeit with some bugs) won't really give us an accurate picture of how retail chips will overclock.

You mean FSB 800? FSB1600 is 400Mhz FSB.

I dunno it seems 400FSB looks to be right around where the motherboards top out, not really generous mind you, I think most P965 with ICH8-R or 975X motherboards, should be able to reach this FSB and have some safety margin to sustain just fine.

2.8GHZ is actually quite decent that would put it above the stock FX-62.

2.8GHZ is 400x7, so what Furen siad is accurate, with 1600FSB as the upper limit assuming, you cna only reach 2.8GHZ when the multiplier is x7 on the E6300.

yes i think the mobo will be the bottleneck... coz of low multiplier, if conroe had a multi of 15 think how far it can oc

My plan is to get a 6600 and overclock the FSB to 333Mhz. That will basically give me a Woodcrest at 3Ghz. Its a 25% overclock which seems fairly modest for the 6600 but the problem is that I have never overclocked before so don't know the safest way of doing it. Will I need a better than stock cooler for that overclock?
