A C.O. has no business in the Military. Since it is all Voluntary all I can assume is that he was willing to talk the benifits but was unwilling to earn them when the time came.

I think he did the right thing. Heck, he didn't throw a grenade into the tent of his fellow troops and kill two people like the other fool did. At least he realized early on that the war wasn't for him and found a peaceful way to get out of it. However, his life is going to be pure hell for a while. My feeling is that he's going to be the subject of a lot of harassment.
Funk said he's attended every major San Francisco Bay area anti-war rally since finishing his military training last fall.
I guess it was his buddies who were hanging off the Golden Gate bridge a few weeks earlier.

Well, if he truly is a CO, I feel he did the right thing. I have to laugh a little bit about this quote though......

"They don't really advertise that they kill people," Funk said. "I didn't really realize the full implications of what I was doing and what it really meant to be in the service as a reservist."

Yeah, the military has never had to kill anybody before......

Those tanks, bombs, and missiles are just for show......

Funk, who grew up in Washington state, enlisted when he was 19 and living on his own for the first time. He said he caved in to pressure from a recruiter who capitalized on his vulnerability.

"They don't really advertise that they kill people," Funk said. "I didn't really realize the full implications of what I was doing and what it really meant to be in the service as a reservist."
Well, what did he think the military did? Sit around and bake cookies all day? As far as caving into the pressures of a recruiter, doesn't this guy have a back bone??

I think he's a coward. What was he thinking when he joined the military? Did he think that they all hold hands and protest together? No! Everyone knows what the military does.

He should have never joined.

Hmm, living in San Francisco and attending numerous peace rallies? Sounds like a fairy to me. Maybe he meant to join the Girl Scouts.

Military, hell he joined the Marines. If he wanted to join the military and not kill anyone he could have joined the Navy and been a cook. They only make you nauseous once in awhile.

Kick him out with a dishonorable discharge. Let it go at that.

His statement is a direct result of all of the political correctness that has been pushed on this country for the last twenty years. I read an article in the local paper this morning that the Marines, yes the only military branch that still segregates women and men, has discussion groups and q and a sessions with newly enlisted's parents to discuss basic training. What the hell is that about, it's the marines, any reasonably intelligent person should be able to figure out what basic training is going to be like with the marines. It will be hell! And there's nothing much the parents can do about it anyways. sheesh.

It's well known that when you join the millitary that the government owns you.

Also they weren't asking him to do anything immorral like execute pow's just to fight a war that he was trained for.

Yup.

I think this country hit a new low when some schools banned playing "tag" because it's too competitive and promotes winning and losing. What is it with people thinking that no one should be judged? Competition makes you stronger and better. You might be the slow guy on the field one week, and after you practice more and get in shape you're no longer the slowest one out there... you raised the performance bar. Instead, nowadays the common thing to do is ban competitive activities so that no one ever loses. It also stops people from striving to forward themselves. They can sit there and not feel bad about being slow and having no desire to get better.

You know it can be hell but it is also a good thing and with the right attitude this hell can be made into a very positive thing, you just have to do as you are told, nothing more nothing less.

... if he's not up for war, better he not get sent there and maybe put other soldiers in danger. ...

If people are "not up for a war" they should not volunteer for military service. people just try to take advantage of everything. It sure is nice the military often pays for college and often has great benefits. Too bad when it comes time to repay the military for all those benefits, people think that their weekends and two weeks a year always cut it. The bottom line, IMO, is that he did not do the right thing now, and nor did he do the right thing in the first place by joining.

... What the hell is that about, it's the marines, any reasonably intelligent person should be able to figure out what basic training is going to be like with the marines. ...

The operative words in this paragraph.
It is a pity that it seems so many people are not, in fact, "reasonably intelligent".

Boot him out with a dishonorable discharge and let him have that follow him around.

He should pay the army back for all his stipend as well whatever cost associated with providing for his food and lodging during his training and the period of service after that.

In my opinion CO status should be reserved for draftees. Volunteers that become COs in my opinion are just cowards.

What fool needs the army to tell him they sometimes kill people? Are we better off without him, oh yeah, lol. Just the same I would have sent his butt over to Kuwait to do something non-combat related. Or did he have a "conscientious objection" to peeling potatoes one country away from the front line....

So...in his 20 years of life he has NEVER seen a war movie? Maybe, just maybe that would give some insight to what the fvcking military does.

Good grief what a fool and a coward. I hope he lives in shame for the rest of his life.
