Eli- You don't wanna see my Metallica MP3 collection.

I used to raid Napster at work before Metallica was "banned". People usually drop their jaw when they see how many Metallica songs I have.

Metallica is one of my favorite all time rock bands. The ones I listed, where simply the newer ones that I had in my playlist. Their not all my favorites, however, I do listen to them.

If any of the people who liked Papa Roach ever played an instrument or did anything musically then you would realize that the music takes no talent. It is pure crap that I could write in my sleep. The music business is not about the music anymore. It is about money and creating bands with certain images.

I have been helping local bands in the area for a while now and one band in particular was told by a large recond companies that they didn't have to "look" to make it big. That said it all. Anyone remember BuckCherry? Did you know that they were put together just like the backstreet boys and nsych? They are no better. They played a local club here a few times before they got big. The reason bands get mainstream today is because record companies pay alot of money to make them big. I mean hell the record companies have spent so much money pushing Creed and that is some utter sh*t.

Anyways, I will shutup not. If you want to here some music true to itself why not look up some local bands in your area.

<< Of course, most of my music consists of hard rock.

Creed, Deftones, Disturbed, dope, Filter, Godsmack, Lit, Orgy, P.O.D, powerman 5000, Slipknot, Staind, Static-X, Mudvayne, and well you get the idea ..
>>

yes, Lit and Creed are as hard as it gets! that first sentence should be reworded to: "Of course, most of my music consists of trendy stuff i hear on the radio"

The problem with mainstream music today is not that those involved are untalented. I happen to like Creed and some of the other bands that people are bagging on here.

The problem is that the musicians aren't given time to grow in their art. The big record labels are just sweatshops, they find people with some talent and before they have a chance to really become good musicians they're shown a lot of big numbers and they sign on. After the record companies have put out a top-selling album, sent them on a tour, and generally had their way with them they're cast aside. This usually takes all of 1-2 years. Hardly the time it takes to cultivate talent.

i really like Papa Roach, specially broken home and between heaven and insects. i have never seen the guy live but i saw him on letterman, and the vmas, all i have to say that the lead singers gives it all to the crowd, he is so into his music that it makes you tinggle all over when you see the emotion that he puts out. all in all, i think its a very good band, and i hope that their second cd is as good or better.

slipperyslope-People have been complaining about this forever. It won't change so do whatever makes you happy. I write for a local punk magazine and craploads of sh*tty music from LOCAL bands comes across my desk every week. That is the beauty of it all. Take what you want and sh*tcan the rest.

btw-I think Disturbed kicks major @ss.

JohnLee, I know it will never change because there will always be people that buy into the image crap.

Trust me on the local stuff, I see alot of sh*tty bands but I have always looked at it this way, they are up on stage trying to do what they love. I have to respect that. They are not making any money off of it, just doing it for the love of music.

There are alot of groups that I just don't like but I respect because they are good musicians but I just happen to not care for their style of music.

I just happen to love exposing people to new music that they have never heard of and will probably never ever hear on the radio. There is alot of great music that isn't mainstream and is true to music.

The music business is not going to change anytime soon and I know that but I try not to be part of the problem

slipperyslope-Well said. I do not, however, consider myself "part of the problem". I mean, come on. Music appreciation is purely objective. Sure there are bands who are infinitely better than some of those we're talking about here but that doesn't mean sh*t. Who are we to tell anyone else what is good? Well, Buckcherry really did suck, but still...

Slightly off-topic, but I have a friend who writes tremendously comedic movie scripts. One even got produced and made it to SUNDANCE. Still, he cannot score an agent. Mind you, his stuff is far and beyond the crappy comedy movies that come to your local theatre. Keep the faith.

I do not think they have any impressive talent, and Coby Dick (lead singer) gets a little TOO into it, (Read: No headbang spins during slow songs) but they still play pretty good music, imo.

JohnLee I totally agree with what you have said. I know I am young and have much to learn only being 21 but I do understand a few things about the music business I also don't consider you part of the problem. I have just come to realize that only about 3% of music is original and good. The other 97% is just rehashes of what has already been done and most likely been done better

A daughter of a guy that my mom works with writes script in hollywood. I think she has realized it isn't as easy as she thought it would be. She sold her first script 3 months ago for $100,000 but when you realize that it is her only form of income and it is the only things she has sold, that money doesn't amount to much.

I personally would love to start a band myself because I LOVE music but I don't have the patience nor the desire to be told what to do by the big music companies.

Jim

p.s. I do listen to some mainstream stuff. *Shakes his head* My favorite band is Tool.

I agree with what most people have said here. Music has almost turned into a joke in the last Decade.

To those of you going around saying a band, any band, has "no talent", you are wrong. All bands have talent. Even Korn. Even Nsync. They can do what they do, very well. As hard as it is for me to say it, I bet none of you can sing like any of the little boys in Nsync. But the fact that some of them are "manufactured", ruins it for me, and a lot of other people.

I play guitar. I play almost exclusively Metallica. Yeah, It took me 5 minutes to learn Last Resort, compared to many months to learn Master of Puppets, but I at least acknowledge that they do have talent. It's a cool song, only because it's heavy in the way I like. That old, NWOBHM type riff heavyness. Not heavy like Korn, If you can even call that heavy.

I have S&M, Load, Reload, and Live Shit: Binge and Purge on CD, but either don't listen to them enough, or just haven't made them into MP3s yet..

And no, I didn't get them all off Napster ... I own all the CDs..

BTW- I highly recomend the 24 karat Gold digitally Remastered disks if you're a metallica fan. They rock, especially for Ride the Lightning, which sounds like it was recorded in a cave. (But what a rockin' album it is..)

Papa Roach - neither good nor bad. For me, they are rather ordinary. I listened to five of their songs this morning.

"Last Resort" suffers from extreme overplay on the radio. The others Sephiroth_IX recommended are ok. Papa Roach isn't really doing anything different from the bands that preceeded them nor are they doing it better.

IMO, Sublime was a different and exciting new 90s band. Too bad their career was cut short with the O.D. of Bradley Nowell. I don't find too much really new for 2000.

Eli, I disagree partly. I never said that those groups had no talent. I don't think they have any MUSICAL Talent. I think Britney Spears and Nsych have great dance skills but this is music and their music does not take talent.

I almost agree. I do consider anyone that can sing to have musical talent, because I'm an aspiring singer myself, and let me tell you, It's not easy... Heh, and yeah, they can dance..

But I understand what your saying, and I agree. I'd like to see any one of 'em pick up an instrument and do something with it other than hold it.

Thank-you Johnlee. It seems to me that any band - like Sublime - that has a huge grassroots following (including airplay from bootlegs) that finally forces the attention of a record company is so much better than one that is relatively new and is heavily promoted by a record company that "discovers" them.

It seems to me the Internet should make it really easy to uncover thses bands. However, I haven't said "wow" in quite some time. With all the bands out there, there isn't that much consistant originality.

I was involved with the 'local' scene in Hawaii for a few years. There is some unbelievable talent there but not many of the bands are committed to stay together for the long haul and do 'what it takes' to finally "make it".

papa roach...not a chance

Seems a lot of you guys are complaining about 90s rock, maybe you're not looking in the right places. I try to plug my fav band everytime I get the chance, so listen to the album "tip" from finger eleven. Great stuff, IMO the best album created...ever.

A band that I have been listening to for a while is In Flames. They are pretty cool and have some awesome guitar riffs. I think their best album is whoracle. They happen to be one of the few bands that can pull off an instrumental track nowadays.

FInger eleven is very NIIIIIIIICE. Good call. As to In Flames, I'm feeling the talentless crap flowing through the band, although I will give it another listen to be sure.
