Conservatism is exactly what you get when you feed the ignorant/isolated fearmongering about the "big world" out there.

Says the guy who doesn't even own a car. I'm a moderate with Conservative leanings and I bet I leave my state more than you leave your city.

I think the biggest reason for the growth in conservatism is the one currently in the oval office. I don't think any president has motivated people so strongly, strongly against him and disastrous polices. Just two short years of this guy and just look where we're at.

Especially amusing that conservatives are all, "Mah taxes ar too high because dem demcrats ar givin' away all mah money," when...

The Nascar Nation ain't even close to paying for themselves, yet they think it's their taxes that pay for everything. A cute little delusion that their political masters are never going to correct.

I'm a geographer and I have to say this is a serious misuse of cartography to mislead the public.

The state data means nothing because it's not high resolution enough. The divides between liberal/conservative are not state vs state, but urban vs rural. To get a better idea of the state of affairs you have to look at counties. If you did, you'd see some very politically incorrect correlations.

If I can find good census data I will make a county map like all these conservative bashing ones that keep popping up. I can almost guarantee it will make conservatives look very good in every metric but income and teen pregnancy.

Well of course, everyone knows that ideology is urban/rural, but what's your point? Certain states are becoming more conservative vis a vis one another, and their urban/rural mix has been held constant by...well... reality.

It would certainly provide more granularity to look at a county by county breakdown to determine the degree to which economic decline is correlated with increasing conservatism, but the state by state breakdown is perfectly viable, if less exact.

Exactly, this is why we need more federally mandated social welfare. That way, those of us in red states can take even more money from the blue states. What is so great about it is that blue states are the ones pushing for more social welfare. It is like blue states want to hand their money to red states.

Not much to see outside the city but a endless wasteland of walmarts/parking lots/fast food joints and boring clusters of crackerbox houses.

The rest of the USA is a sad place. (NYC is nice, whats not been gentrified into submission)

I don't know why they're becoming more conservative but it's probably a reaction to something... like increasing crime, increasing poverty, or whatever. Remember that study linking fear/threat recognition with conservatism?

They're probably doing badly economically because all their damn jobs got outsourced by the oligarchs who got them to vote for Reagan and Bush.

Is my sarcasm meter broken??

Maybe those 1950s car ads telling you to see America were onto something.

I have been all over the USA many many times, in buses, Amtrak, cars, even partway hopping freight. (I used to be in a band)

And yes, each town is the same boring shit with the same corporate fast food joints and banks. There is no "Middle America" its a giant carpark wasteland.

The difference between USA towns? The water towers have different words. All the people are bored and batshit insane from spending generations watching the fucking water tower rust slowly. Thats whats wrong with the sociopath conservatives.

Yep, Red states need to get their own houses in order before they try to dictate to the rest of the country.

If you honestly believe that, you are the crappiest traveler ever. I've lived all over the country, and every place I've ever been to has been awesomely unique in its own way. If you can't find that it's YOUR fault, not theirs.

What city do you live in that's such an edgy, fantastic place?

I made a map a couple years ago showing the state redistribution, to point out the hypocrisy of bashing redistribution and "socialism"... But you have to keep in mind there are reasons for that redistribution. Look at which states are on the right side of that chart, and ask yourself what they have in common.

zip code would be even better granularity. also i wonder if it could be combined with population density somehow :hmm: dots maybe? more dots = higher population density, while color intensity of the dots = liberal/conservative bent?

(although i'd also say it's more urban vs. suburban, as there really isn't much rural population left)

Yes, the McDonalds playground is on the opposite side if you go to the next city. That is American diversity?

AFAIK the best granularity is census tracts, but they're kind of arbitrary. The best would be a dot for each resident showing income, education, race, gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation, marital status, job, and religion but that's not going to happen.

Nope. As I imagined, you suck as a traveler, but you want to blame it on everyone else. Sure there are plenty of shitty places in America that I would never go back to, but your complaint about the whole country being crap except for NYC and whatever mythical city you live in is retarded.

Although NYC is pretty amazing.
