That said, I understand and agree that the "since we can't agree on a moral grounding, let's have no moral grounding" that pervades much of America is going to eat us alive - but that necessarily comes from the "progression" of a morally diverse society. People naively believe that the "tolerance" evidenced in our society is actually an achievement, when it is in reality the by-product of a normlessness that will be the cause of our state's disintegration.

Heroin addiction is infectuous, which means that when others are exposed to it, they like it. How is this bad? If you like something, you generally want more of it.

>>

So "American culture" = "heroin addiction"? Do we need to ban McDonalds, Macy's, and Coca-Cola, and put everyone in the U.S. on methadone?
>>

Well, in a way....
>>

Explain, please.. I am interested to hear your ideas (and I am not criticizing your attitude, I am genuinely interested, particularly after reading Netopia's post)..
>>

Netopia gave already a rough idea of what I was hinting at.

We live in a world of propaganda and few give a damn about whether they're being fed lies or not. It's a cozy, comforting world, where people can live out their lives without ever having to worry about anything serious.

What Netopia described as a side-effect of too much freedom, an extremely liberal and rather careless approach towards, well, anything actually, is one thing we can observe in the US and 'affected' countries. Fewer people care about many things. Their desires fulfilled, they settle back and cease to interact with the world outside their own little world.

The culture in the US is one of individualism, yet countless hardcore groups on various subjects, like racism, religion, abortion etc. are formed at a constant rate. The political system is a curious mixture of Capitalism, Anarchy, Socialism and some other ideologies.

A serious side-effect can be observed by walking into a supermarket. People hardly eat things which are genuinely healthy. It's all about how it tastes and what it looks like. More is better.

Like the eating habits of the average American, the culture in the US is unhealthy.

I realize that I've barely scratched the surface of this issue, but it'll give a rough idea.

I was wondering the same thing. Where do we draw the line on public TV? So far, they are allowed to police themselves. Pretty soon they're going to let things go too far and somebody will have to step in.

Just exactly, where would YOU draw the line?

Once and Again's lesbian kiss, is a pathetic attempt to stir ratings - the shows struggling and about to go under. And that's what all this sh*t ever comes down to - a further erosion of what little moral grounding exists, simply for the sake of some $$.

I rather just call him a moron rather than disect his views.

Seriously, here's what I think of North American culture (I saw NA, since canadian is not that different than american). IMO, NA culture works on the principle of the LCD -- lowest common denominator. Its fast, easy and anyone can like it.

Take McDonald's for example. Their food is nothing but cheap trash, yet they are the most successful 'resturant' chain ever! They get kids hooked on trash from and when they grow up, most of them simply continue on with the trash and very few would rather eat something nicer (and healthier). The same thing with pop music. You got your 'badboy' rappers and your slutty singers. Kids look up to them, grow up with them, but how many will ever see through them? Not many.

Many other countries try to resist, but they have a hard time. There was a show on the History Channel (I think it was) about how the French protested against American culture in the early 80s. They smashed coke machines and blocked mcdonald's resturants. Why? because their culture takes more effort, its much harder to pick out a wine to go with your particular dish, than it is to simply say 'coke and fries'. In the end, they failed of course.

As for me, I genuinely try to stay away from all the sh*t.

Finally, when I look at pop culture today, I think to myself that I'll never have kids! Why? I can't imagine being able to raise a normal, smart, down-to-earth person when they'd be surrounded by sh*t all the time.

OK . . . just to swing it back onto topic, sort of.

Why the outcry about the station manager pulling the show? It is his perogative as to what he wants to show on HIS television station. However, he is provididing a service, and if people don't like the way he provides the service, they will become someone else's customer.

So in other, words, I don't understand the big hullaboo.

I think it had alot more to do with the character being well under age, then anything else. As someone said, Once and Again is simply try to get ratings. The reason they are doing it is because its going to get canned, again.

Well, conservative's have their dumba$$e$, and so do liberals. Why can't we just accept that these idiots will never learn instead of posting an easy target for all to prey on.

Shocker! I'm so glad to hear that position from a die-hard liberal, Moonbeam. Impressive!

Oh my God! Another shocker! Elledan and I agree on something here. Elledan, I'm surprised this is coming from a Dutch, though. Or am I mistaken about your nationality?

In any case, I would suppose your belief stems from Buddhism? That would explain your position, despite your hostility toward Christianity (my perception of course).

"What Netopia described as a side-effect of too much freedom, an extremely liberal and rather careless approach towards, well, anything actually, is one thing we can observe in the US and 'affected' countries. Yep! I believe in moderation too. Extremity of any sort in my book is unhealthy. Even excessive "love" is just so unhealthy.

"The culture in the US is one of individualism, yet countless hardcore groups on various subjects, like racism, religion, abortion etc. are formed at a constant rate. The political system is a curious mixture of Capitalism, Anarchy, Socialism and some other ideologies."

Indeed, I am a strong believer in individualism. I appreciate it and appreciate this country for that reason. However, as you have indicated, it appears we are deviating from such practice and belief system with all of this interest-groups.

"A serious side-effect can be observed by walking into a supermarket. People hardly eat things which are genuinely healthy. It's all about how it tastes and what it looks like. More is better.

LOL! So true! However, I can proudly state that I am far from living that kind of lifestyle. I would rather go hungry for a day than form a habit of eating junk food, especially from fast food restaurants. I used to eat at fast foods once in a blue moon, but the horrour stories gave me a reason never to visit them again.

[Marty the Maniak:] "Finally, when I look at pop culture today, I think to myself that I'll never have kids! Why? I can't imagine being able to raise a normal, smart, down-to-earth person when they'd be surrounded by sh*t all the time."

Well, that's my attitude too. I'm so sad when I see how far things have deteriorated here. However, I do appreciate the fact that we have not reached the same level the Western European countries have. I'm afraid according to history, we are headed that direction too, though.

Here's what I think: I'll either have no kids at all or if I do have any or adopt any, I'll move elsewhere (might even be somewhere within the USA 'cuz there are some areas with less issues of this nature) just so they can have a conducive environment for a healthy growth both physically and mentally. Then when they reach a better age of understanding, they can return here or anywhere else they wish. I guess to accomplish that I'll have to marry a guy with my kind of moral standard, and this usually means a religious guy--not extreme (i.e., not a fundamentalist) of course (he doesn't have to be Christian, for that is not the only religion with such beliefs).

I doubt I need state that this is my opinion and how I choose to live my life. I do not oblige anyone to choose the same path.
