Shocker! I'm so glad to hear that position from a die-hard liberal, Moonbeam. Impressive!
Oh my God! Another shocker! Elledan and I agree on something here. Elledan, I'm surprised this is coming from a Dutch, though. Or am I mistaken about your nationality?
In any case, I would suppose your belief stems from Buddhism? That would explain your position, despite your hostility toward Christianity (my perception of course).
"What Netopia described as a side-effect of too much freedom, an extremely liberal and rather careless approach towards, well, anything actually, is one thing we can observe in the US and 'affected' countries. Fewer people care about many things. Their desires fulfilled, they settle back and cease to interact with the world outside their own little world."
Yep! I believe in moderation too. Extremity of any sort in my book is unhealthy. Even excessive "love" is just so unhealthy.
"The culture in the US is one of individualism, yet countless hardcore groups on various subjects, like racism, religion, abortion etc. are formed at a constant rate. The political system is a curious mixture of Capitalism, Anarchy, Socialism and some other ideologies."
Indeed, I am a strong believer in individualism. I appreciate it and appreciate this country for that reason. However, as you have indicated, it appears we are deviating from such practice and belief system with all of this interest-groups.
"A serious side-effect can be observed by walking into a supermarket. People hardly eat things which are genuinely healthy. It's all about how it tastes and what it looks like. More is better.
Like the eating habits of the average American, the culture in the US is unhealthy."
LOL! So true! However, I can proudly state that I am far from living that kind of lifestyle. I would rather go hungry for a day than form a habit of eating junk food, especially from fast food restaurants. I used to eat at fast foods once in a blue moon, but the horrour stories gave me a reason never to visit them again.
[Marty the Maniak:] "Finally, when I look at pop culture today, I think to myself that I'll never have kids! Why? I can't imagine being able to raise a normal, smart, down-to-earth person when they'd be surrounded by sh*t all the time."
Well, that's my attitude too. I'm so sad when I see how far things have deteriorated here. However, I do appreciate the fact that we have not reached the same level the Western European countries have. I'm afraid according to history, we are headed that direction too, though.
Here's what I think: I'll either have no kids at all or if I do have any or adopt any, I'll move elsewhere (might even be somewhere within the USA 'cuz there are some areas with less issues of this nature) just so they can have a conducive environment for a healthy growth both physically and mentally. Then when they reach a better age of understanding, they can return here or anywhere else they wish. I guess to accomplish that I'll have to marry a guy with my kind of moral standard, and this usually means a religious guy--not extreme (i.e., not a fundamentalist) of course (he doesn't have to be Christian, for that is not the only religion with such beliefs).
I doubt I need state that this is my opinion and how I choose to live my life. I do not oblige anyone to choose the same path.
