I would think a 911 is easier to repair because the engine is accessible from above, instead of only from below

With the hatch above the motor and the one behind the seats, you actually have better access with a Cayman/Boxster that you would think.

I thought there was no hatch above the engine because that's where the convertible top goes

Funny little procedure to get the back of the vert top loose then you pivot it up and out of the way.

Access is not that bad, it took almost as much time to get all the crap open as it did to change the water pump on the wife's Boxster.

So, I went and test drove the '08 BMW M3 that they had on the lot and the 2005 Porsche 911. I definitely liked the feel of the 911 transmission and the car was a dream to drive.

I think I might have talked the misses into keeping the current A4 or backup when needing to cart around the girls, and getting the 911 as a daily driver.

Salesman knew what I was talking about right away when I mentioned my concern on the 996 issues (the seal issue), but stated that the issue was more prevalent in the late 90s 996s, and that most of the cars got taken care of via recall from Porsche or updates to later 996s. The dealership is known as THE place to get your Porsche serviced around here, so I would think that they would know what they're talking about when it comes to Porsche issues.

That being said, he still said that he recommended the 2005 997 coupe over the 2003 996 targa that I was interested in as well (the 996 targa is $5k less but only about 10k more in total miles). I'm not sure if that was him just pushing the higher priced product or not.

'm thinking that I might wait until the A4 is paid off and reassess my selection options then. Any more opinions from the crowd?

I had 911 and I can say that back seat is really useless, I used it just for packages sometimes. I understand you though because I always had daydreams of getting a 911, it was my first car and I also got a used one cause it was cheap porsche and even though I could buy another new model at the same price, I didn't do that. And btw maintenance is really not so bad.

How long until the A4 is paid off? The more you wait, the more you can afford a newer one. If you have any doubts financial, don't buy it yet. Mine is sitting in my garage since December and won't be coming out until late March.

The cars will always be around and it isn't like they aren't mass produced. There will always be a well taken car waiting for you.

Yeah, we're holding off until the A4 is paid off later this year, at least. But I'm still thinking it'll be a late model 911 when I go to buy.

Good choice. No need to double your car payments for a joy car.
