IB subs are absolutely awesome; in an isolated room they're the way to go but if you're not careful they turn into a soundproofing nightmare .

Speaking of soundproofing, you should really get yourself some Acoustiblok (www.acoustiblok.com). When *properly* installed, there's nothing better. It's not cheap, but if you're handy and are willing to do it yourself you will save a ton of money.

I was going to build an IB... but my wife threatened eviction...

the plus side is I am not deaf

My pitch for IB went like this when planning out the HT build in the next home:

Me: I think I'm going to do infinite baffle for the HT in the next home.
Her: Infinite what?
Me: Infinite baffle. It gets rid of the giant box(es) for subs and hides them behind the wall. Plus it's cheaper.
Her: Sounds good to me.

Win!

I am waiting for the reno... she is planning an addition to the house. I am planning to use the cavity below the addition for my IB  Besides, my subs are built into the main speakers... I am not sawing them in half. They are 50" tall for a reason

But honey, you said you would like a massage so I turned up the sub!

In a $15K room I'd spend $10K on audio/audio installation.

Oh yeah, HTPCs are crap. Get a PS3 (or standalone Blu-Ray) and Tivo.

LOL, right back at you.

I would never spend as much on audio as video.

1. $1000 projector (isn't there a new 1080p projector that'll hit this price point?)
2. $200 screen
3. $800 receiver (too many choices to list)
4. $200 TiVo HD
5. $800 Sony BDP-CX960 BR-D changer (coming out in August!)
6. $1400 SVS PC-13 Ultra subwoofer
7. $2100 for speakers (others can make better recommendations than me)
8. $1000 for the HTPC
Spending 3x on audio compared to a mediocre entry level projector for a movie theater simply boggles my mind.

Thanks for all the input so far...much apreciated.

I think I should pause this thread for now though...I dont want to start getting to serious. I havnt even seen the inside of a house yet. Id like to get one before the end of the year to take advantage of the tax credit but nothing in life is guaranteed. The biggest thing I was wondering was price so I could use that while shoping around. All the responses helped narrow it down.

Ill refer back to this thread when I start getting close, I still have questions...but Ive got a few months before I start asking. If I let this thing keep going youd all probably start asking for pictures

Oh, the only one other thing I still havnt figured out and might want to know is what kind of dimensions I should be looking at, or what kind of shape (how long front to back and how wide? Or what ratio to use?). Square, circle, triangular? Im still thinking max 10 people unless theres a reason to consider more or less.

Thanks again, hopefully Ill be back. Er, well Im not really leaving...but uh...yeah.

Rectangular is usually the best you can reasonably expect; just try to make it where the three measured dimensions are not too close to one another (i.e. 9 x 13 x 22 would be a good room, 10 x 10 x 10 would be the worst). The reason for this are that parallel walls create standing sound waves; the frequency depends on the distance between two parallel surfaces. The more similar the distances, the more the standing wave effect, and the greater the room boosts or cuts a particular frequency...by up to 20dB for a given frequency in a room!
