I am currently running a lumia 920 that starts to feel a bit aged, and with the current price slashes of lumia 950 and 950XL I'm considering buying a 950.

The 950 is currently priced ~$350 her in Denmark (Oneplus 3 ~$450)

Obviously I'm aware of the lacking app market compared to android, but how is Windows 10 mobile as a platform with the 950 atm?

I'm also aware that there might be a surface phone on its way, but I'm not looking to spend a lot on a new phone.

Anyone with some experience to share?

I think I saw a deal here in the USA where you could get a 950 with the docking station for $400 or $300 without. I think I might stop by the AT&T store close to me to see if they have a 950 set up with the dock. I am very Windows oriented (used exclusively at home and work) so the idea of a windows phone has a certain allure.

Also, it seems like a few key apps have been released for the UWP. Maybe it ain't dead yet?

Is there something about not having here maps on wp10? Is it possible to have offline maps?

Maybe, I should wait and see if a Surface Phone appears, to see if MS are planning on continuing Windows Mobile....

MS will not be abandoning mobile. They've lost billions and have a no public plan to move forward but no company in Microsoft position could abandon the future of their business. Mobile is a must for MS survival.
That being said, the 950 is an interesting phone but nothing special. Beautiful screen, pretty good specs, cheap build. Worth he $300 on sale now for, nothing more. I used it for a bit before upping to the 950xl, then back to the 1520.
Windows works for what it is, I personally love it and prefer it over all others but I'm not a major app user. Major Office user that travels a good deal and consumes more media than anyone I know and it works great.

The 920 does what I need, so the app situation is not a mayor concern. From what I've read the audio quality is not so good, but apperently you can use headphone amp with it. I would just like a faster phone with a better camera.

Don't have 950 but I have been running W10M for a while now. MS actually did a decent job on map but it don't have the walking/transit options like Here map had as far as I can tell. It is almost as stable as 8.1 now but there are some small annoying changes you need to get use to like no touch to shot in camera app and wifi icon in quick action only to turn it on/off not taking you to wifi setting...etc

No it's not lol. Cloud is Microsoft's future. Their mobile business will continue to live on life support, but they've reiterated many times that cloud solution will be the future of their business.

Don't. If you want a Win phone, just get the cheaper 650. Otherwise you'd be throwing money away at a platform that's fading, even with MS plans on releasing the Surface phone soon.

I like my wife's 650, almost considered the 950 myself but it's so expensive ($700 CDN).

I have a 950. It's a solid device as long as you can find it for a reasonable price. The screen and camera are MUCH better than that of the 650 (which I also have).

I have one that I like well enough. If you're not into apps then W10 for Phones (I think that's what they're calling it this week) isn't bad. I got it for free from a friend that works at MS, but I'm cheap when it comes to phones. I've PCs and tablets for major use stuff. I came from a 920 and it was a big jump in terms of speed. It's not as stable as teh 920 was, that thing was a brick that I could drop from my roof (happened once) and it didn't scratch. This phone reboots if I drop it, but that prob has more to do with the removable battery.

I recently bought a used Icon 929 for about 60.00 which even Verizon has updated to WP10. Nobody thought that would happen. So far it has been pretty good. I think the anniversary update is supposed to add some new features. I don't use a lot of apps but sometimes I do miss stuff like the NBC Olympics app and none of the big video surveillance camera makers (Exacq, Vivotek) have a WP10 mobile app. I still miss tap to wake and glance from my old 822 but the screen and camera are really nice on the 929. A good used 930 might work well for the OP since they are cheap and if he doesn't like it, he isn't out much money... just resell it on ebay, but it has good specs and a great camera.

Yes, maps can be stored on the SD Card now. Not sure what email attachment fix you're referring to, but in general I don't have issues with them so I'll assume yes.

Yes, long press the file and you can either save it locally to the phone/SD card or open it in another app.

Microsoft just also released a firmware update for the 950/xl that adds double tap to wake along with fixing some other small bugs. Win10 Mobile as a platform though has been rock solid (for me) here lately. It's been a while since I've had anything crash on my 950xl. It also runs pretty good on my Lumia Icon that I used when I was on Verizon. It runs ok on a 650/xl but you will definitely notice a difference between a 650 and 950 not only in speeds but in the camera as well.

So I can get a refurbished lumi 950 top condition ~$240 with two years guarantee or a htc m9 one good condition ~$270, sony x3+ new ~$240, moto x style good condition ~$260.
All are 32gb versions.

Decisions, decisions....

950 was never a very good phone, mediocre build quality and it was pretty buggy for a long time after release (generally should be ok now). Camera is good. Android blows, but it has apps, so you can sort of fix all the terrible UI issues with a bunch of 3rd party apps, major pain to get everything just right though (still not satisfied honestly). If you don't care about apps Windows is >>>>>> android. IMO of course

if he doesn't care about apps he can keep using his 920.
