Considering new monitor

I currently have HP LP 2475w and there's nothing wrong with it. I always like to improve though, and started thinking about giving some new technology a shot.
I heard the new (or rather, "new", since I wasn't following the monitor business for years) LED-backglit monitors are pretty cool, and IPS panels advanced a lot, and response times are even greater (that's an important claim for a gamer, isn't it).

Can anyone think of a good piece in the sub 800 eur ($1050) range? It would have to have 1920x1200 resolution, because I absolutely hate the more common fullHD. I assume 24", too.

I got my eyes on Dell UltraSharp U2413 which seems like some ultra super new technology, but then noticed some reports of pretty lousy overdrive that screws the image up and can't be switched off, which makes it useless since I play games as well.

i want a new monitor too, but its hard to find something worthwhile when i already have a 27" monitor and everything else is also 1900x1000

The LP2475W is still an excellent monitor. Any 24" monitor you get today would be a side-grade or very mild upgrade. The only sensible true upgrade for you is to a 2560-wide 27" or 30" display.

Hmm. I guess you're right.
Maybe I will invest into one of those calibration devices instead.

I have a 24in 1080p LCD/LED TV that I can run at 1920x1200. Best TV and monitor I have ever used it only cost me $100 on newegg with free shipping. TV is great route if you find a nice priced one.

These are the best monitors for the buck in my opinion. If gaming is important to you, I'd check out the monitors with no scalar. They'll have less input lag. The negative is that you will have some limited color calibration options.

Don't buy a TV. Unless you get a plasma, the input lag will kill you when you game. Most people would find the plasma buzz is too annoying when sitting that close.

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ is a really good place to learn about this stuff.

Overdrive is present in most monitors with fast response times. Tftcentral has very exhaustive tests on it for ever review.

Scalar is what processes the signal before it shows up on your screen. It does stuff like adjust color, size (if the signal isn't in the native resolution) etc. On TV's it'll also do stuff like frame interpolation etc. It can make your monitor look quite a bit better, but the huge negative is that it can add quite a bit of input lag to the monitor. Consistently being 2-3 frames behind might not seem like much, but it's a lot when it screws up your aim.

Speaking of a "sideways" upgrade......

Instead of going larger, for the money and since he was looking at the U2413, could he go with two of these? Dell UltraSharp U2410.

I know these still use CCFL backlighting, but it's a true IPS panel and the response time is close to the monitor he has now.

Or would the Color palette be too far apart between the HP & the Dell's?

There's a 1ms slower response time on the Dell's but the brightness level seems to be the same.

One flanking each side of his LP2475W.

If he turned them ALL up into Portrait Mode and used say Eyefinity, he'd have a pretty decent sized screen for gaming.

I know he's looking for some New Technology, but at a price point around $1,000 USD he is going to be disappointed since it really hasn't gotten that much better yet in the IPS arena.

Yup I found that site already and read a little.

Considering I don't see anything out of ordinary while gaming on the HP, I guess I don't need to bother about the tech inside..

24" monitors @ 1920x1200 don't really have problems with input lag. However, at your price range you can afford a 2560x1440 or 1600. At those resolutions the scalars can cause a lot of input lag.

I started reading a little about calibration and don't understand one thing: why use those ICC profiles when I can simply enter the RGB values manually right into the custom profile in the monitor itself?

You mean scaler? Just helping the OP out with google-able terms.

The custom RGB setting is only letting you change three points. ICC profiles have many more points, so they can fit the output much more closely to an ideal curve.
