i dont want to spend more than $330 (including both speakers excluding shipping). i want bookshelf speakers with better highs and mids than my p162s do and the bass to be the same or a little bit weaker.

i may not buy new speakers considering the quality of my amp and the fact that i need to buy some new albums on CD, but i am thinking about getting new speakers.

given all that, what do you recommend?

Hmm, maybe Ascend CBM-170SE B-Stock if you can find any.

Or Hsu Research HB-1 MK2

Or you could look on Audiogon for some used speaker deals. I think I've seen used Onix Reference 1 go for around $300-350ish, they used to msrp for $1200.

I would go the used route. Either that or save some money and wait to buy some better speakers. Personally I think speaker quality increases pretty dramatically as you go from your price point to about double that for good bookshelf speakers. Nothing wrong with saving a little bit and getting something you'll be happy with for a very long time. Much better than buying too early and having the itch to spend again in a year or two. Probably more economical too.

so what wrong with your primus speakers?

If I were to upgrade I'd go with these. Friend has em and my small effient amps can push them well. I like the design and the sound, tho to me they sound "WARM" like infinity so you maybe won't appeal to your wants.

Hmmm, I have the 163's doubt there is much difference. I guess I like the sound as I have not returned them

You could try Energy or Klipsch. They are more bright highs than I like tho. I am happy that my infinity's are 'warm' sounding. I think the warm sound makes the music a bit more smoother. I've tried both Energy take 5 and Klipsch... Booth seem highly rated but seem to cause ear fatigue after an hour so. Not much of a horn fan.

What type of AMP are you using? I just dabbled back into the tripath world. Looks like Virtue Audio has revamped it's production and is now shipping amps again. Basically a TK50. I pre-ordered one suppose to be here soon, but so far, Infinity sounds pretty good on my old trends amp.

Good Luck finding your perfect speaker! I also hear good things about BIC America but... from what I have read I think it produces more of a warm sound and I almost went with BIC DV62si over 163's but... I didn't want to chance returning speakers and I already knew I like the infinity sound... but BIC's might be just what you are after maybe they are more of a bit brighter and could be something to look into. Speakers are so hard to fit, one person can love them and others will hate em. So, trust your ears.

Ascend Acoustics advertises that their speakers are particularly synergistic with Harmon Kardon AVRs:

That being said, at entry level price points, I think the character of a speaker will overwhelm differences in competent amplification.

Just go to website over speaker brands that interest you and see how they describe the character of their house sound and see if that jives with what you want in terms of sound and types of music you listen you.

"Take your PC’s megatasking abilities to extreme levels with the first native 8-core desktop processor built with dynamic, tuneable performance to handle multiple intensive apps without breaking a sweat."

Taken from AMD FX's processor description on their website. So I guess that means it can do all of that perfectly "without breaking a sweat".

I think it's funny that on a tech forum where we benchmark EVERYTHING, all of a sudden we break from this model and read marketing descriptions of products. You wouldn't read AMD marketing slides to decide if you want to purchase a processor yet you read speaker audio marketing slides?

I'd say read up on AVSforum. Read their Speaker section so you can understand the brands and which speakers are a good value for what you need and read the DIY Speaker section if you want to learn more about how speakers work and just want more knowledge.

Don't just blindly trust marketing quotes.
