Console questions from a neophyte

Not a xbox v ps3 thread. Already decided on the ps3 strictly for the blue-ray capability. But I'm a PC guy, and don't really know squat about consoles. The gaming side of the ps3 is for the kids/grandkids, the blue-ray is for me.

My question is this: Is there any reason NOT to get the new slim model? I've read the wiki page... smaller die, less power, less heat, etc. Is there anything functionally that has changed tho? I read about no linux on the slim, no biggie. How about ps2 games? Do I recall correctly that the ps3 plays ps2 games? Does the slim still do that? I've heard about the new motion control stuff they're finalizing (ala Wii), and I assume that would surely work with the slim. Are the media center type functions the same in the slim? Basically, other than saving $100 (which I guess is moot now too since I've been seeing non-slims at the new price), is buying the slim a win-win?

Short answer: go for the slim, no reason not to. The slim is now the PS3, the "fat" models are no longer being produced.

Unfortunately PS3s no longer support PS2 games and have not for a while now. You can still play PS1 games though.

PS1 games didn't come on a disc did they? I'm assuming they're downloaded, probably for a token fee? Or maybe a disc with a bunch of them on it.

PS1 games were on a CD. you can buy and download some PS1 games from the PSN Store. They're always adding more to it too.

I'll throw my hat into the ring after the bell has already rung and say that I agree that going with a new Slim is the right choice here. Really no reason to go with the older fatter version unless you just like the way it looks over the Slim.

Only reason I can think of is that you can probably find an "old fat" ps3 pretty cheap with all these slims being out now. Surely lots of people will "upgrade" for vainity's sake.

Out-of-warranty repairs cost $150, so figure that possibility into the price of a used PS3.

Buying new you should get the Slim.

It does play PS1 games on CDs, but not PS2 games on DVD. Neither does the fats in stock now, you have to go back to the Metal Gear 80GB or the launch 20GB/60GB for PS2 BC.

If you don't have it already, get Netflix for blu-ray since it only costs $3-5/month extra to add renting blu-rays to their plans. They even carry TV series blu-rays like season 4 of Lost.
