Actually for WinFixer, you want to use not only the VundoFix but also Ewido. You can download a freeware version at www.ewido.net. I'm wondering if Ewido could be added to the main thread for software to use for removing spyware. Ewido takes out a lot of unwanted things and amongst most people, it isn't even known. Also you're going to want to manually delete some things using HJT but if you don't know what you're doing or deleting then be careful as you can delete very important information for your computer.

Agreed, Nocturnal. Ewido is a great program to have.

For those who use online scanners when they've been infected by malware, I know that a lot of people use TrendMicro Housecall.

However, this site requires one to use IE. There is a European TrendMicro Online Scanner that supports "all major browsers that support the Java 2 Platform":
* Microsoft Internet Explorer
* Netscape (6+)
* Mozilla (1+)
* Firefox (all)
* Opera (7.5+)

It also supports the following operating systems:
* Microsoft Windows 9x
* Microsoft Windows NT
* Microsoft Windows 2k/XP
* Linux
* Solaris

I just found out about it and haven't had to use it, but you might want to bookmark it just in case...

Should I use AntiVIR personal or should I use McAffee that Comcast offers for free?

Symantec and McAfee can be system resource hogs but, if it were me, I'd try out the McA. since it's free. While AntiVir is a good freeware AV, it doesn't have an email scanner component. I believe Comcast uses a pop server for emai which is an important factor as to why you might want to use McA.

I currently use NIS 2005 and have been getting the CCAPP error when shuting down. Sometimes my system locks up on shutdown also. Especially after playing BF2. I am ready to move on to another A/V and firewall but wouldn't you know it my employer now offers Symantec Client A/V and Firewall for free. How does the client software compare to the home software on system resources, etc.

I like what I have read about kaspersky. So I am leaning towards dumping symantec totally and moving on to something else.

Thanks,
Rob

Symantec Corporate Antivirus is far better than its home user counterpart, if your employer offers that for free to you, then by all means use it.

What about the differences in resource usage between home and corporate?

Last time i saw both in action, the corporate version used less resources than the home version.

NOD32, Antivir and AVG were the lowest, last time i checked. I would suggest AntiVir, better detection rate than AVG and it also is free.

i didn't include the kaspersky online antivirus scanner because it doesn't get rid of the viruses

all of those you need to use IE with because they use ActiveX controls

Except one - Trend Micro's House call. Just go back one page to page 3 of this thread and read my post. If you're using another browser other than IE, follow the link for the online scan.

I found a new software firewall you may want to try, called Core Force. It's still beta, but looks promising. It's a Windows port of the OpenBSD pf firewall with a nice GUI. You can set firewall policies per application, and it also protects filesystem and registry access. It's Free software with source code available under the Apache license.

Just realized no one mentioned about F-Secure products. It was ranked pretty high in the AV test. I've tried the suite version which has everything (AV, firewall, spyware detection, spam detection. etc...). It's pretty good but takes a little over 50mb of memory.

How out of date is the original post in this thread? I'm trying to figure out which AV to install. I've been a loyal Norton user for the past 7 years and now it seems that they're 2006 product line sucks arse. After reading this thread, I'm more confused than educated. It seems that different companies make the "best" of each piece of the puzzle. However, wouldn't it take up MORE system resources if you had to go and install all of them? Is NIS really that bad compared to installing individual products?

You are in luck, not only do most antivirus vendors offer free trials of their software, but also freeware alternatives are available.

It seems that different companies make the "best" of each piece of the puzzle.
That is because there is no "best" antivirus. You have to make the choice about what you want in an antivirus product. Do you want the best detection rate or low memory footprint; free solution or do you wish to pay? The choice is yours.

Wouldn't it take up MORE system resources if you had to go and install all of them?
It is a bad idea to have 2 or more realtime antivirus products going at the same time, as mentioned here:
Should I run 2 or more realtime antivirus products for extra protection?

This is not recommended for it sometimes causes conflicts.

I think l31itz was asking about using an all-in-one suite (AV, firewall, spyware remover, email scan) versus using seperate applications for each purpose.

I don't think installing an all-in-one suite (i.e., Norton Internet Security) saves any resource when compared to installing individual applications. You can actually save resource by installing a combination of low-resource applications. I have tried basically all major commercial AIO package, I decided to use a combination of applications (all diff. brand) because my combination uses less resource and provides me with better control of those applications.

Agreed - plus there is no all-in-one suite that offers the best of everything.
