It's not as good as McAfee's online scan anyway. I tested several of these and McAfee found the most.

computer -

You must have d/l'ed the trial software. The scan only d/l's an ActiveX - which most online scans do. TrendMicro's European Online Scan is Java-based which works well with FF.

The reason I suggested Panda is that it's very good for finding malware that's still present - but not as fix. For that, I'd recommend BitDefender's Online Scan. Personally, I'm not a big fan of McAfee but - hey, if it worked for you, that's a good thing.

No it was the online scan. :Q Like anti-malware programs, AV software is the same as far as "A" finding something "B", "C" "D", etc. will not, and another time the others will find something that one will not. I use KAV Pro (Kaspersky), but periodically I run all the online scanners to see if they can find anything KAV missed. Sometimes for example Panda may miss what McAfee finds, and vice-versa. That's why I use all the anti-malware programs I can find.

BTW, the most recent AV software tests put Panda pretty far down on the list, McAfee a little better, and KAV still at the top with AVK close to it. One place had AVK a slight edge over KAV. I believe AVK uses the KAV "engine" or "database", something like that.

Interesting. I'll keep that in mind about Panda. I definitely agree with you about using different online scans along with your onboard AV, i.e., what one misses, the other one will catch.

SWEET JESUS! I got hit with something bad.
Ad-aware found only a few things, Spybot found several more, but I was still getting pop-ups and desktop icons. Had to install SpyWare Doctor to find the rest.
I think these l33t haxors work harder every day to piss me off.

EDIT 1: Argghhhh! Son of a BITCH!
It came back, had to use Killbox to delete the two offending programs, (that I know about).

Anybody know how to disable Active Desktop completely?
Windows Help shows me several different methods to disable web content on my active desktop, but not how to completely stop it from being used.

EDIT 2: Nevermind.
Took care of it winth TweakUI.

Note on SpywareTerminator: We originally listed Spyware Terminator on this page out of concerns that Crawler, the company behind the product, had established connections with IBIS, a well known adware distributor responsible for such adware programs as Wintools, Websearch, & Huntbar. Although we found no problems in our initial testing with Spyware Terminator, and while the vendor itself announced that it was exiting the adware business (1), we decided out of caution to impose a three month probation period before we would consider re-testing and, if warranted, de-listing the the product from the Rogue/Suspect list. During that three month probation period we monitored the behavior of IBIS and Crawler. At the end of the three month probation period we re-tested Spyware Terminator, again finding no problems serious enough to justify listing the program on this page. As the vendor involved has not been involved in the distribution of adware for many months, and as the program itself exhibits no problems serious enough to warrant mention on this page, we have decided to de-list Spyware Terminator from the Rogue/Suspect list and can no longer regard the program to be "rogue/suspect."
I'd still avoid that program like the plague. There are better removal tools out there such as Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, Ewido, etc....and the others listed in the OP.

I have Symantec Corporate Edition, and I can't stand it. Looks like Kaspersky is the way to go. If I uninstall the Symantec Security Suite, I will also be without a firewall. My question is:

Should I spend the extra $10 to get the Kaspersky Security Suite? Or should I just get Kaspersky Anti-virus Personal 5.0 and something like Kerio for a firewall?

Thanks.

BartPE is excellent if your computer is so farked it won't function correctly, it's an XP live cd. In addition to bypassing viruses and spies, you can also defragement system files.

Apparently my mobo has a built in NVIDIA firewall . Is this considered a "hardware firewall"? I'm assuming it is which means I can run it with Kerio firewall, right?

Any problems running both at the same time? Is it overkill? Thanks.

I and many others were not satisfied by NVidia's Firewall. I disabled mine (notice I didn't say deleted - that can cause problems) and added another software firewall. I use ZoneAlarm, but Kerio is very good.

As far as both of them working at the same time, I can't say with any certainty. Generally speaking, you should have only one software firewall program installed.

I was referring to a firewall separate from your PC, such as the firewall in your router. I really need to update the OP, lots of things in it are unclear and out of date.

You should also add Outpost firewall, retail and free editions to your OP Firewall section.

Anyone mentioned the VMWare Player and browser? If you have some spare ram give this a try out. You can also use it to play other virtual machines, so you can run linux while running windows or vice versa.

You can download the free version from here.

This is the version that most people swear by.

Why do so many people like it if it's not being updated anymore? I would think most people want an up to date firewall, or one that auto updates every week or something.

No one seems to have mentioned SpyCatcher (Tenebril)
Free express version picked up 4 baddies on deep scan. Keyloggers, backdoors, adware.
Had used Ad Aware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster and MS Defender, all had missed these.
Runs in background like Defender. Make sure you uninstall Defender first, they
don't play well together.

You can download it from here.

Cool thanks. Tried it out for a bit, doesn't seem as informational as 4.2 is, nor does it integrate with Windows Security very well. Very minimalist. It's a shame 4.2 isn't free anymore.

Schadenfroh, you might want to update the OP that neither Sygate or Kerio are free and/or exist anymore, other than maybe the legacy download of Kerio 2.1.5.
