Really? I thought among others the roman empire was pretty powerful. They might not have had nuclear weapons or icbm's, but I"d say they were more powerful then we are.

I don't have time to read the thread, so forgive me if this is a repost.

Japanese news sources are reporting that as many as 11 planes are "missing" or otherwise unaccounted for. I've not seen anything like this in American news reports, but it is reasonable to assume that news is being censored at this point. Could the "missing" planes be headed to other targets, or more likely already shot down by our military forces? Air Force jets having to down commercial planes with innocent civilian passengers would explain the news reports being censored.

bauerbrazil: you obviously feel little compassion for the loss of life that has happened today. I urge you to reconsider what has happened. Not only did these terrorists attack a civilian site, they did so during the time of day to ensure maximum loss of life. How can you even begin to say this is the fault of US policy? There is nothing that justifies this level of autrocity. If you want to complain about the CIA or past or present US foriegn policy, please do so outside of the context of this thread. This was an unjustified act of terrorism, no matter what you think the US is guilty of.

I've been following the events here in Italy . . . it is really devastating what has happened, it seems like a Tom Clancy film but it isn't. I only hope that America's reply will be like in his novels, that is in an astute and direct attack to the leader/leaders who ordered this criminal attack.

My guess is they're a little behind in the news. I get a French channel, and they were also a little behind...


If other planes were hijacked, they would've hit earlier. They know they'll get shot down once the army has had the time to react.

I just got a call from a friend who's wife works with a girl who's boyfriend work at Detroit Metro Airport. He said that there's a plane out of radio contact over Ohio. Supposedly, this is accurate, but who knows these days?

All planes are accounted for according to CNN. There is not a single commercial airplane in the sky over the US right now. That is mind boggling.

The FAA just announced that all planes are now grounded, and the 2 missing ones are found.

It has been said that the safest place on Earth is on Air Force One...

And I'm sure right now it is flying with a squadren of F-15 escort fighters... (or at least I hope so)

The nice thing is Air Force One can be refueled in mid-air, it can in thery remain in the air until its engines wear out... Perhaps a month or more if they cycle between the number 1/3 & number 2/4 engines... But that isn't needed here, just not needing to sit on the ground and refuel is enough, they can take off with a low fuel load and get gassed up in the air...

This is a very sad day. I live in Hoboken, NJ, right across the river from NYC. I woke up to a phone call from my friend, and I was urged to put on the news. I was shocked to see what had happened. The video is so dramatic. Everything is shutdown around here. I hear sirens left and right. The local hospital is receiving victims as well. I'm pretty scared now. Who knows what will happen next. My brother was in Journal Square in Jersey City, NJ and saw the 2nd plane hit the WTC very clearly.

But I had just gathered (apparently wrongly) from your previous post that you thought it could have been about 20 people who got together and said "hey, lets hijack 4 plans and crash them into the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon." Sorry about the confusion. What I guess I meant was that an "organization" of some sort had planned an attack, which can be done very inexpensively (as we have seen, flight info on the net, tickets are cheap, etc. etc.). A "handful" of over-zealous volunteers were handed their tickets with instructions to hijack their flights. They were told and shown where and how to fly (it really isn't difficult once you're in the air). "Aim for the two biggest buildings in the Manhattan skyline." "Aim for the building shaped as a pentagon." They probably had some other targets in mind as well. What's done is done. Really, using weapons such as aircraft is free. So how much could it have cost? A few lives (terrorist) and probably $10,000 - $20,000 in airfare.

Well planned, yes. I'm not arguing that. But many many "organizations" are capable of such an act. It's doubtful that any will take claim for this within the next couple years though.

I just hope we all can recover from this. Fear is what "they" want. "They" have us exactly there. It's time to show "them" that terrorism is not humanity.

As far as who "they" are... I don't know. But my bets are in the middle east somewhere. If I'm wrong (skinheads, militarist Americans, abortion activists, the IRA, my 401k, whoever...), oh well. I just hope people learn that life is life, and it's not something that should be wasted on petty differences (such as religion or nationalism).
