Depends. It can be triggered by stress, smoke, caffene, impulse noises, nothing in particular.... It's the gift that keeps giving. Mine will change pitch sometimes, It's worst is when both frequencies get going.

I just started hearing a similar noise last night here in Ottawa. I thought it was a fan in my computer but that does not seem to be the case. Very annoying. I have tinnitus occasionally but this is a lower frequency. Definitely a hum rather than a hiss.

Hum is gone in my case (pun). It was indeed the 120mm fan at the back that needed a dusting.

I too have the high pitched sound in my apartment. I share the apartment and my flatmate told me about the high pitched sound in the lounge and I too can here it at night. It's a very fair high pitched tone and I can't pin point where it's coming from and we both here it.

lol, there's a building across the street from me that has a Deli with a loud humming exhaust fan. It drives me fucking crazy. I called the city about and they send the police but the police never find an issue. I don't know how the people that live in that building deal with it.

Fucking annoying because the Deli is open 24/7.
Part of the perks of living in a city I guess.

Considering the age of the thread, it may have been a CRT somewhere in the house or within proximity. They often would put out a ~15khz audible sound. More noticeable when it's very quiet such as my dad catching a late night hockey game with the TV on mute and everyone being in bed.
