Contractor payment issue

I had damage to my roof due to bricks falling off my chimney during a winter storm. The damaged looked small, at the edge of 2nd story asphalt shingled roof. Got a couple bids (had trouble getting people over here), one over 6k, the other 2k. I online-signed the lower bid and they sent a crew of several people who did the job in little over an hour 2 weeks ago. As they were leaving the guy who came over and did the estimate calls me and is at the house. I go out there, he says they used 2 bundles of shingles to do the repair, they cleaned up quite well. I ask him if I can pay by credit card or Paypal and he says no, they want a check and they'll email me an invoice that day and he will come over next day and get the check from me and I say fine. I call the office next morning and explain I will be out in the morning and have a medical appointment in the afternoon and am told they will inform the guy and I expect he will come next day instead. He never came, I've had no word from them, and it's been 2 weeks.

Should I send a check to their office for the amount on the invoice they emailed me ($2000)? Call them first?

No, I said they emailed me the invoice at the end of the OP.

The work crew came and started the work about 8AM, Sept. 23. I got a call from the estimator a bit after 9AM, he was here and I went right out and talked to him and he said that stuff about invoicing me and coming the next day to pick up the check. I received the email invoice that afternoon. The following morning I called the office and said I was busy that day and was told they'd tell the estimator, obviously so he would facilitate with me when he'd come to pick up the check. Since, crickets.

I would print the invoice and just go over to their shop and pay it. That way your hands are washed and you don't owe money anymore.

Although when I got a new furnace and water heater it was a few weeks before I even got the invoice. In my case they accepted etransfer so I just sent the money that way.

I thought of this today, am considering it. However, they are in Walnut Creek, which is 14.3 miles from me. Probably 1/2 hour drive each way. I don't drive much, maybe 700 miles/year. Most days I don't get in my car.

Just inexperience. I'm only asking because the guy said he'd come and pick up the check in person and hasn't. I suppose I'll have proof they got the check by virtue of my bank statement. Can't remember if I get checks from my bank after the payee gets their money these days, I hardly ever write a check anymore.

Good reason to engage contractors who or when they aren't real busy.

Is there penalty for late payment?

I mean, you can use a certificate of mailing for proof you mailed something to them.

Cert mail, restricted delivery would make the intended person sign for the mail. If the miss contact with the postal delivery guy, they would have to arrange a redelivery or go to the PO to get it.

I don't know if there's a missed payment clause, I could scour the invoice. Anyway, it's been just a couple weeks, I think I'm good. Going to mail the check today. The company has a good reputation based on Yelp reviews.
