Control CPU fan with turbo switch?

I currently have a K6-2/500 CPU in my Linux box, and it runs fairly cool with just the heatsink, and the CPU fan not running. However, when I'm compiling or doing some other processor-intensive task, it tends to overheat and cause little problems. Since I'm not using the turbo switch on my case for anything, I'm curious if it would be possible to rig up something so I could turn the CPU fan on and off with that switch? I can't imagine it being too hard, but I'm just not sure how I'd go about doing it...

its been a while since ive used turbo, is the switch an on/off type? like you push it once and it goes in, push it again it pops back out? If so its entirely possible, but the how-to will be different depending on whether you are using a 3-wire connector on the fan or 4-wire

to my knowledge, the turbo switch is an on-off type switch, but it only uses a 2 pin connector. correct me if i'm wrong.

The turbo switch is on/off - push it in, it turns on; push it again, it turns off.

And my CPU fan is just using two wires (not directly wired to the motherboard, it's using power from one of the cables for the drive power). It's just an old AT case and motherboard.

Oh yeah, I also have the wires switched so that it's using just 7V for the fan instead of 12V.

all you have to do is run one of the fans power wires through the turbo switch so that when you turn the button on it closes the circuit and the fan gets power...then when you turn it off the breaks the circuit and fan loses power

DANG, didnt know anyone still has a turbo switch. Im honestly jealous. Hate having to run those "Slow down your CPU" programs when playing old games. Anyone know how that works? Do I need a MB that supports it?

I was thinking about that, but I was worried about melting the switch by doing that The wires going to it aren't very big. But since there isn't anywhere for the switch to plug into on the motherboard, if it does melt it's no big deal. Heh...

one serious problem I could see is that if you leave that fan off too much you could cook your CPU very easiliy.

but if he normally runs the system w/o fan and is just now hooking it up it can only get safer

and i really doubt that the wire on the switch is too thin to power a fan, even the thin wires on reset switches are enough to run a fan
