Controlled Fire

My parents have a lot of branches and brush from trees I've cut down on their property. I've been told the easiest way to get rid of it would be to burn it in a controlled fire. They're using the good wood for burning, there's just a lot of waste left over. Any tips on this?

get a permit.

contact your local fire department, some counties require a "burn permit" which usually consists of contacting the local fire department so that they know what you are doing, in case either someone reports the fire or it gets out of control

I know about getting the permit and all. I was wondering about methods to keep it smoldering with as few flames as possible.

just be sure you have a fire line, plenty of clearance from the stuff buring to other stuff you don't want to burn
