Conversation topics with your parents?

So I live about 500 miles away from my parents and visit once every 2-3 months, and my mom especially expects that I call her 1-2x a week, but it's becoming such a chore now trying to think of conversation topics.

Usually a call will go..

"Hi mom, what's new"
"Not much, what's new down there?"
"Hmm not much...."
"..."
"Okay I'll see you in two weeks"
"Okay be safe tonight, bye"

I'm Asian too but my mom isn't *that* crazy if that helps..

Live about 7 hours from my family. I usually call them almost every night or they call me. I like hearing from them regardless of the topic. The conversations usually end up with science fiction shows or technology, since my father and I have near identical interests (both of us are computer scientists, sci-fi fans, etc.).

My Mom and I usually talk about something she recently watched on the History/Discovery channel or stumbled upon on Wikipedia. Always excited whenever she learns something new and curious to know if I knew about it as well. With my Dad, I used to normally talk about current events and news but we'd always end up with him discussing the events that led to the first Gulf War. He'd fit right in in P&N.

I'm definitely going to avoid contact as much as possible with my parents unless I need something as soon as I move out...

Stressing out about struggling to come up with topics to talk about is also healthy. You are giving into your mother's expectations about the weekly phone call while you seem unenthusiastic about the idea. If you don't want to do something, don't do it. What is so hard about that?

When I'm at school (6 hours away) I call my mom every Sunday.

when I call my mom, we gossip, talk shit on other family members, talk about what's generally going on in our lives, etc.

When she was alive, we called my mom, or she called us, at least once a month.

The conversation usually pertained to her job, my job, my kids, what was going on in our lives/her life, the weather, (she lived in Spokane and they get cold and lots of snow, giving me lots of opportunity to laugh at her for living there) and just the usual run-of-the-mill bullshit.

If you need help finding topics to speak to your parents, you're more socially fucked up than the average...

No doubt, if I called my mom to talk about eating a hamburger she'd be pretty happy.

i never really talked with mine much when i had moved away. wed talk once every week or two, chat about the rest of the family and whats going on, what my parents have been up to....that was about it.
