convert existing wired router into wap?

I have an existing wired router that I would to convert into a wap. The reason I want to keep my existing router is that I think the firewall is top notch as well as it has a print server built in. Is there a way that I can keep using my wired router and just plug in a device that makes it a wap? Would I need a wireless bridge for that?

Also if anyone has suggestions on a relatively inexpensive wireless router (under or around $150) that contains a print server please forward them on because that is the main reason I want to keep my old router.

would a wireless bridge work in this case? because I think I can pick one up cheaper than a new wireless router, not to mention the router would provide functionality that I wouldn't use.

Actually, the wireless router will probably be the cheapest way to go, since they're the loss leaders for most companies. I guess they figure once you buy the router you'll buy wireless adapters at full price. You can frequently pick up 802.11b wireless routers for $10-20 after rebate, and I've seen 802.11g routers for $40 after rebate within the last two months.

I would get a wireless router combo and use it in tandem with your existing network. Unless all of your wireless hardware can support WPA (ie: NOT using WEP) then the security is laughable at best. Set up the new wireless router so that it connects to your ISP, and plug your old router into that. Kepp anything of value behind the second router so that anything coming in from the wireless connection can't backtrace and cause trouble.

On that note, I did something similar to this when I got a Linksys wireless router and found it to be more hassle than it was worth. Coupled with the fact that the only machine in my whole home that had a wireless NIC was my laptop, which i almost never use, I just took the Linksys back to Fry's and spent the money on a hooker. =)

That's a really good idea, I didn't think of that, hmm I might do that instead.

Thanks for link buyer262000 does anyone have any other good deals? My laptop is 54 wireless G, so I'm kinda looking to get something that would support that. I went to Best Buy and seen that they had a 54g Microsoft router for $50 and a Linksys for ~$75

yea you were right about that, the wireless bridges were aroun d $180, so that's definitely more than I want to spend
