convert movie to put on nexus 7

I have a lot of movies on my nas and I can play them fine thru xbmc on the tablet.
I have even played them right from the nas so I know it can play them ok.
Well getting ready for a trip I decided to move some movies onto the tablet.
Well that ended quickly. The original disk are 50G and the rips ( I have them in mkv format on my nas ) and they are 25G...so what is the best way to redo these to play and fit on a tablet.

I would use handbrake. I have a lot of rips that I've converted to mp4 for use in itunes so that I can play them to my apple tv. Those same files also work with my nexus 7. I used the "apple tv 2" preset in handbrake because that was my primary purpose for encoding them, but you could probably use different settings to get better image quality and still play them with a nexus 7. For instance, the apple tv 3 preset should output 1080p files, which would be better for a 1920x1200 res nexus 7. I couldn't tell you how much space you'd save at that preset, but the one I use seems to get them down to ~1gb per hour.

1080p rips for me average around 8 GB.

720p can be less than half, depending on the movie.

Given the space requirements/restrictions, I would just rip at 720p unless you have/want to use an OTG cable.

For watching media on a 7" tablet, 1080p is entirely unecessary. Feel free to convert to a 720p .mp4 at about 2000-2500 Mbps and it should be fine for a display that size.

Unless this is purely a bandwidth issue, there's another route. I use my 2013 Nexus 7 on my home network to stream movies in bed. I use ES File Explorer to browse my Win7 and WHS2011 computers. I then play with MX Player or Mobo Player... they work with almost all of my MKV movies, most of which are 1080p.

Your file size might be bigger than mine, however. The largest I have streamed was Pacific Rim - 28GB.

Don't forget that if you've got devices capable of 5Ghz, you'll get better speeds that way. (Though you may be distance limited if your router isn't centrally located)
