Converting...advice please

Have been an avid AMD fan and user, but lately have decided to switch to intel as AMD in my opinion is going backwards, getting behind and going down.

I do heavy digital photography workflows, Photoshop CS, and heavy digital video work...capturing, encoding, burning and so forth.

I would like to go with a 3.2ghz Pentium 4 processor with the 800 mhz fsb but I also understand there are a ton of intel chipsets out there.

I am looking for advice on which one would be the best for my applications....needs to be durable, powerful, fast and not prone to overheating.
I also would like recommendations on the best motherboards for it...I am an avid ASUS fan for their quality..

This is a joke right? Judging by your needs I'd agree that AMD isn't the right fit for you but geez man...

Knouri...maybe I overstated it, but that is the way it appears to me...I have been loyal to amd for years, but they, do not seem like they will ever break the 3 ghz barrier..A lot of promises and so on, and not much on delivery...I can't believe they started the 64 bit processor slower than the 2700+.

But my main gripe is that my 2700+ runs great for a year and now all of a sudden I go away for the weekend and come back and wham that sucker is up to 70 degrees centigrade and climbing...I checked everything and nothing is amiss...I have had other probs with their processors in the past, after a while....EXCEPT the slot a's...great processors....but I am fast thinking that their chips are good and fast, but not built to last...and I do use stock processors..no overclocking or otherwise and an slk heat sink...thanks..t

This is definitely not the place to discuss this, but you seem to not have looked at the benchmarks that the A64 3200+ and 3000+ are putting up. They are most certainly not slower than the 2700+ and are faster than anything on the market in their price range.

Again though, you are making the right choice going Intel since you do lots of encoding. Enjoy!

Seconded by an Intel fanboy. They still lag slightly in encoding though.

You have got to be kidding, right ? Are you still on the "megaherz is everything" kick ? I have a 2700, and it is great, but my new 3000+ wipes the floor with it. In encoding the 3.2 P4 has a slight advantage, TODAY(64 bit software might change this, don;t really know yet). In almost everything else, the 3000+ is faster. Look at the benchmarks. And as for 70c temp, is you HSF dirty ?, did it get loose ? Take it off, clean it, and re-install it.
