I was a big RC5'er back in the day....gonna start up a DC project again...convince me on which to join! I don't like SETI, so don't bother with that one.

For starters I'll be adding my Athlon XP2200+, PIII 666, and K6-2 350. More to come...so...which one?

I like so many of them it is hard to choose.

Distributed folding is awesome on Windows 2K/XP machines.

Seventeen or Bust has peaked my interest recently and is awesome if you are into the math projects.

The Community TSC team is out to help cure childhood diseases and could really use some help.

Find-A-Drug is a small project that you could really make a big impact in.

There are so many great ones I can't decide.

The Rothberg Institute For Childhood Diseases is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for children suffering from Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). We operate at the intersection of modern biology, computer science, and chemistry.

The work we do on TSC will also have a direct impact on cancer research, and we will be testing the drugs we find as weapons against cancer. In addition the work we do to create a system to attack orphan diseases will form a prototype for work on other orphan diseases.

TSC is a genetic disorder that leads to benign tumors in multiple organs, including the brain, kidneys, heart, eyes, lungs and other organs. During the first few years, the severity of TSC can range from mild skin abnormalities to, in severe cases, seizures, mental retardation or renal failure. For more information about TSC please visit www.tsalliance.org
Go here to find out more and to download the software
TSC

Would make a big different for the TSC team

I like Seventeen Or Bust myself If you can't decide, try a few out and see which one you like. I switch up every once in a while just to see what some of the other projects are like.

I like Folding@Home (obviously ). The client behaves quite well, and doesn't impact system performance, so you can leave it running without worrying about it messing up Outlook or lowering your FPS in games. Check out the getting started thread for more info. A short description from the Folding@Home website follows:
What are proteins and why do they "fold"?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do?
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously acheived. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

Right now I like seventeen or bust. Since you used to run rc5-64 you may be interested in another math project. Distributed folding is nice with its auto updating client and fast work units. Read some threads in here and also the faqs and pick something that interests you. Or you can be like me and try them all and see which one(s) you like. It does sound like you have a few computers to work with. Contributing to the team on any of the projects will help the team regardless of what project you choose. Some cpus may be more efficient at a certain project so that is another consideration

I personally am running Seventeen Or Bust (and being the Team leader kinda helps in matters too ) after running Seti exclusively for 2+ years!

What drew me in, is the fact that even with just a couple of computers, you can appear to make much more of an impact than with a project like Seti.

This project has so far found 5 new Serpeniski Primes, one by our very own SeanD (Sean2002). There is also a "subset" to this project, which is the ability to "sieve" more numbers, looking for possible candidates for the rest of the project to work on. At this exact moment in time, this would be more suited to the slightly slower CPU if you do not feel the actual client is making as much as an impact as you wish. Your UserID and TeamID are currently being noted as you Sieve, however there are no stats for this at the moment, but soon there will be. This is yet another side to the project, being able to do some of the "background work" as well as the down-and-dirty work of actually factoring looking for Primes.

The project is optimised for each individual processor, and enhancements, such as MMX, SSE, SSE2, 3D-Now! and Enhanced 3D-Now!, which covers the appropriate extras on each CPU series since the original Pentium! This means that the project will use the best of whatever processor you throw it at

If you do decide to run Seventeen Or Bust, I will let you know that the speed (cEMs/sec) is dependent on the n value you are factoring. In general, the higher the number, the faster it will go. However, all systems seem to move up/down the n values together, so you will always be in line with what numbers everyone else is doing.

Of course, the best thing to do, of course, is to try out the projects that you like the sound of, and then run them for a bit, and see which you prefer.

I am currently runnings the ECC2-109 project....

it's the sequel to the previous ECCP-109 project

the project is a math project, it searches for certain points along elliptical curves, in order to better encryption algorythms...

Our team for that project is currently fairly small

my miniteam is currently the highest producing and highest overall user on our team, which is kinda sad...we don't want to be first place on the team, we want someone to come pass us by!

You mind at least trying one block of seventeen or bust (with the XP2200+)? I want to know the cEMs/sec you get on it to see if AMD's MHz myth is true or false. I have a P4 2.13GHz computer and your AMD should put out the same numbers if not more if it's true.

I just want to find out if it is worth my time to build my adopted brother a XP system over a P4 being he is in the age where gaming is a fact of life.

Thanks in advance if you do it

I'm running an XP@1.9GHz(which I guess makes it an 2300+). For k=55459 and n=2427790 I'm currently getting ~233500 cEMs/sec.

yeah, DF is my favorite.

Don't have to jump through any hoops to crunch while I work and game and a "set it and forget it" client
for just about every OS.

Don't really know much about what you value and enjoy in a project.... Hard to help you too much

WUs are small, so you might really like that with the slower comps. DF defaults to a max RAM usage of 25K

but you can select a "use more RAM" option if you have it to nearly double production. (150MB used if you select this option)

I was initially interested in TSC or DF, but they use screensavers...I don't use screensavers on my system, and I use it most of the day anyway. I need one with a client that sits in the taskbar and uses idle cycles, like the distributed.net client....right now I'm trying seventeen or bust, we'll see if I stick with it.

The ECC2-109 client is much like the RC5 client.
It's even possible to install the client as a service and you won't even notice it. There's a GUI, which sits in the taskbar.
The client uses about 2 MB of memory and bandwidth needed is minimal. (maybe 50 KB/day if you have a fast computer)
And the client runs best on AMD/P2/P3 cpu's.

DF does have a screensaver version, however most people don't use it. They use the CLI version and install it as a service. Utilities exist so that it'll run hidden from the taskbar (and provide you with benchmarks too).

Am I just a dumbass or something? Where are the client versions for TSC and DF at?

For the guy that wanted to know my speed for Seventeen or Bust...it apparently is running a test of some sort? It is 9 blocks in...here are my stats thus far:
current k: 22699
current n: 2443582
blks done: 9
cEM/s: 164581.4
run time: 4:07:46
n.high = 376812

how is that??

Ok, found the DF client....now...is there a way to make it run in the taskbar? Other than just minimized?

Yes there is. Tell us what OS you are operating with and we can then tell you how.
The quick and dirty of it is that if you are running Windows 2K/NT/XP you can install as a service. If you are running Windows 98se, you can
use m0tis' utility. If you are on nix, m0ti, FoBoT, or one of our other nix flavored crunchers can tell you how.

I suggest reading This FAQ

You can also use dfGUI. You can run the client hidden with it, and dfGUI sits nicely in the taskbar. It can also benchmark for ya.

Alternatively, you can use dfDetect. This allows you to make sure DF is running at all times, stop it when program X is running on your computer, etc. It will also allow you to run the client in completely hidden mode (i.e. nothing in the taskbar/systray). No benchmarks though, sorry.

of course, you can use both of 'em together too.
