I feel 270 per tire is pretty cheap considering I pay 350-400 for PS4S. I've also used the Continental Extremecontact Sport and they're just slightly worse than the PS4S but you save 250+ compared to the Michelin.

I wanna know if the mk8 dsg still has a launch control counter.

Practically all vehicles that have a launch control system have a counter and soft limit.

If all you want is bang/buck performance, you can pretty much stop at 60k.

Probably isn't one. I just can't see myself daily driving a lot of cars that people buy that have such expensive rubber and require 91/93 octane fuel. If you opt for the optional 19s:

Still I would imagine that a lot of the tires sized for the Golf R will need to be changed out in 20-30k miles at best (if you get those cheap Kumhos, it looks like 8k is more realistic!). I would not daily drive a car like that. I had the pleasure of daily driving a 2019 Jetta S lease car for a year, and the cheap everything plus 42+ mpg mixed fuel economy really won me over.

Yeah you can launch those criticisms at any number of other vehicles out there, including many that would get smoked by a Golf R. I still maintain that if I had one, it would be my second car and it would be sitting most of the time. I would treat it pretty much the same way I would treat a two-door performance coupe with no trunk.

Premium vs regular never bothered me. The cost always seemed negligible, especially with mileage I drive and the nature of gas prices in general.

Wheels on the other hand. That just irks me.
I'm going to miss the 15 inch wheels on my Camry. Tires are cheap. Perfect for the kinda of car it's is. On my previous car, I could year it up on 16s
18s were on our Mazda6 and while great it always seemed like we had to chase deformities in the tires after a drive through NYC.

Mileage and was it all stock?

If could do it over, I would have probably gotten the Rabbit back in 2019, because the capacitive buttons on the info system are beyond obnoxious, and I don't use the sunroof like I thought I would, so it's just a liability. I do like the ease of maintenance on the pleather, though.

So, what's next--wheels, tires, JB1?

also, you can now create an account over at the GolfMk7 forums.

2021 brand new.
Next up - Roof Rack. Hitch (Might have spent to much time watching StealthGTI's youtube channel).
Lens protectors\Clear bra maybe?

I was never into rims\wheels or appearance mods BUT if I were to get vain the halogens do look a little ridiculous when paired with the LED accents.
I'm on GolfMK7 and VWVortex.

Tires is sort of a given because the Bridgestones (and I think Potenzas--or is that the model for the Birdgestones? I forget) that ship with it are pretty terrible. Wheels, well, I don't really like the look of the Mk7 wheels, and the silver certainly gets grody with your departed brake pads if you don't wash them constantly. I still haven't replaced all that, but will this year, I think. A lot of owners simply replace the wheels because they are so heavy. I've considered this, too, but in recent weeks I've nailed some post-winter craters on the road that I couldn't avoid, and that wheel just keeps on trucking with no noticeable abuse, so I guess I'm somewhat thankful for their heft.

I've also considered the lens protectors when I do the next cleaning--will probably get a dude to do a proper detail, though, with coronabucks. Probably talk to him about that.

I have the 18inch wheels with Potenza RE97AS's.
Between the Camry and our Highlander...I'm currently easy to please when it comes to tires. Going to take me a bit get the feel of them.
For some strange reason, I seems to have some issue with getting decent tread life of my tires so I may end up switching them out for something else sooner than later.

First 24 hours

Pros -
3rd gear. Tis a good time. Spent a good chunk of Sunday afternoon chipping away at break in miles in some minor twisty stuff in third gear. It's been a struggle resisting giving it the beans. Gearing combined with turbo delivery leads me to believe that in full tilt, this is the happy gear.
Front leg room. Awesome car for front passengers who have comic book inseams. First time in 20 years I've had a car that the wife didn't complain about leg room. Gave her more time to complain about the side bolsters being snug.
Small car nimbleness - After years of sedans, suv's and wagons...I've missed a nimble little meep-meeps. I may not get too many miles out of these tires.

Cons -
Ignition barrel. Worst key twisting I have ever experienced. I'm going to lemon law this bastard.
Rev hang (at least while driving it casually during break in period). I can only imagine what Civic and WRX's are like if they are supposed to be worse.
Me-no-likey this hill assist bullshit. I can handle hills just fine thank you.
VW really should have bit the bullet to make sure the carpet matches the drapes on all trim levels. On the S, LEDS everywhere....except the halogen headlights.
Found first defect. The lever on the rear vents was disconnected from the vanes on one side. This car is garbage. (Easy fix using brute...delicate...please don't break force)

TBD - Forgive me heavenly octopus of unearthly third pedals for I have stalled. Took a bit to adjust but I think I've found the groove.

hehe, I stalled quite a few times when I first picked it up. But the day I picked it up was also the first time I had dealt with a manual in more than 10 years. At least, I didn't stall on the ~10 minute test drive (I drove a DSG some weeks earlier). I was also surprised at how high the clutch was. I've thought of--and picked up the cheapo materials at HD--doing the clutch stop modification to shorten the overall throw, but I never got around to it.

I keep meaning to remove the clutch spring assist thingy and the delay valve. That supposedly helps a lot with VW's insistence that the process needs to be more forgiving (slow and boring).

Check this out

1st > 2nd still annoys me. I get it wrong maybe 30% of the time.

Are the Germans still putting those damn delay valves in?? I’ve removed two now from early 2000s BMWs and chucked them in the trash. They make the engagement point unpredictable because if you find it too quickly (as any driver will learn to do in short order) the clutch device itself lags behind ... obviously. They probably put them in there to make sure jabronis are incapable of damaging the drivetrain or chassis by dumping the clutch, launching, etc. during the warranty period ...

yep, still there. And from what I've read, that's exactly why they exist. ...you'd think keeping the hydraulic struts would reduce their liability more (less injuries from dummies bear-trapping their heads in the engine bay), but NooOOoOOOO!

Started yesterday paranoid about it getting bumped\scratched in a parking lot while picking up a cable.
Ended yesterday with wife driving into my back bumper in our driveway.

#sadreact I’m sure she feels awful about it, but that just sucks when it’s brand new. Hopefully it’s not that noticeable?

Dynos are out for the mk8 r. It makes 335-340 at the wheels which is about 40hp more than last gen. It also makes about 300hp starting at 4.5krpm which is up quite a bit from the last gen as well. Estimated tuned numbers on 93 is around 380-400hp.

It's not that noticeable at all. I would not have noticed it had I not caught her looking suspicious at the back of my car with a stressed out look.

so VW was lying about their numbers!

Actually, I guess that's euro to euro generation numbers? US mk7 Golf R was 288hp. (advertised, anyway)

D: ahhhhh!

Man, that sucks (glad to hear it isn't so bad). I think I realized that, after 1 month or so of parking at the very end of parking spots next to medians or anything that would reduce the number of cars next to mine, that I'm not buying a new car again. Just can't handle the nerves. I never cared about this crap before. Suddenly, do.

My story: about 8 months in, I had driven in to work one day because I needed to get something started early and it was going to be a late day. There is a parking deck right outside of my building, and I park on the top, which is pay parking with a kiosk...and I have access to a code (given to visiting VIPs and such--assholes that show up to spend money on football recruiting and shit like that, and do nothing for the actual school--so I had no problem using it when I did). Anyway, I park in my usual spot on the outside row along the wall of one part of the parking deck. I always pull in to spaces. I don't back in like 90% of people in this state. I don't know why they do it.

So, later that night, when walking back, I see that my car isn't there. It's gone. ....oh NO! It's been stolen! It's...been towed and ticketed for my illicit use of code parking (they have no way of knowing). About 5 feet later, I see my car, in the facing parking space, behind where I parked, reversed in to the spot, parked all nice and neat. ....WTF? How did it get there? There's a ticket on the window. MOTHERFUCK! It is parked right up to the wall, too. there's less than an inch of space. The ticket is for an unpaid space. ....and it's marked for not having a front tag (I still haven't put one on, lol), but not fined for that. They noted it because they couldn't see the rear tag, and used the VIN to ticket to the registration. I'm like...these assholes! They towed my car into the facing parking space...just to ticket me! I flag down a patrolling traffic enforcement truck and ask about this--of course, I can't show them my receipt and the paid space, which he suggested, because that would give up the game. It wasn't paid with cc. At least, the dude is helpful and insists that they almost never tow, and if they do, it is to a nearby holding spot. Frustrated, I go back to the car and look in the window.

No parking brake.

Oh oh.

Up to this point, I had been leaving the car in neutral because apparently it is EVIL to start the car up in gear. And of course, this is the second time I forget to use the parking brake (previously, I had caught the car as it decided to leave while I was stepping out--another story dealing with nearby asshole redneck in his parked trucks--another issue with the locals: why does everyone just sit in their cars in parking lots? what the fuck is going on in this place?). Anyway, the side where I had parked slopes down ever so slightly, and of course the floor of that level bounces a lot as vehicles roll through. The spot where I found my car slops down slightly, into that wall, where my rear was found. The picture became clear: at some point during the day, my car ventured out of its space and backed into the one behind it...miraculously, empty, and without ANY DAMAGE to any other possible car. Somehow, improbably. This is bizarre, because it's a very busy parking deck. I can't imagine that space behind empty, let alone it not hitting a car driving through. ....my guess is that it edged out of its spot and some passerby, annoyed but saintly generous, shoved it into that other spot, which happened to be open at the time. Maybe it had been sitting out in the lane for some time, before parking enforcement dealt with it? lol, I don't know.
Once all this became clear, I insisted that I must pay this ticket. I MUST. It is only right to rebalance karma. It's still out of balance.

Where the rear hit the wall, there are little scratches and abrasions on that trim around the license plate mount. If you look hard, you can see them. The license plate was slightly bent, and I eventually lost a mounting screw. That is the damage that I have suffered so far.

Doh!!
Made me chuckle as it reminded me of watching a certain 85 Tempo roll out of a gas station parking lot into the road back in the old timey days.

That is so freaking lucky. I was reading your story waiting for the "crunch" part. Like most youngin's, I drove beaters through my early-mid 20s. In an old, manual Mercury Tracer, I always used the parking brake + 1st gear. Because I've had the parking brake fail in both directions. In one the parking brake cable snapped overnight (freezing conditions), and the first gear kept it in place. In the other direction stayed engaged even after disabling. I drove about 20 miles before I hit a stop light and noticed smoke from the back of my car from the drivers rearview mirror Not that having 1st gear would have spared me there, but it was the only thing I had for the next week until the rear brake assembly could be replaced (at least it had a dedicated eBrake assembly instead of trashing a rotor). So I just use them both out of habit. If it is evil, then I guess I'm just pure evil.

Thanks to an asshole who decided to pretend to be playing GTA on the highway and cross in and out of the HOV lane my car now looks like it was participating in a dirt rally.
Tons of little rock ships on the front end and windshield.
Not even 7 days....and only 200 miles on the odometer.
Adding to the fun, after being pelted by wall of flying rocks I ended up with a damn fuel line rattle GTI's love. On deceleration, between 2K and 1.8K I get a buzz coming in through the passenger A-pillar that I track down to fuel line mounts ahead of the rear passenger wheel.
Currently velcro'd until I can get it to the dealer to fix.

Fortunately, this little bastard is a blast to drive.
