I honestly do not understand why people feel the need to rip on people who's parents buy them stuff. How exactly does it affect you? You are kind of people who will happen to drive through a nice neighborhood and see some teenage kid getting into a nice car and you will instantly form a negative opinion of that person. You have no data at all, yet for some reason that kid is a spoiled rich kid who doesn't know the value of money, etc, etc. And here's the funny part. I bet not a one of the people here who is bad mouthing this guy would turn down $12,000. Not a one of you.

I actually didn't have a problem with him wanting to get the best value for his dollar. I took offense to his statement that "poor" people always nag him because he is wealthy. Well, honestly, I have some fairly sizable assets and have never had anyone nag me about it. Only if you flaunt it and act like an ASS do you take MY criticism.

Ok, I'll admit that particular post was a little uncalled for.

And since when has a Honda Accord become a luxury sedan? am i missing something?
Yes, you're missing the quote I replied to. I'm glad to see you're considering something more realistic.

what the hell do I have to flaunt? I drove around in a 1983 turbo diesel throughout highschool. You wouldn't know that I was rich if you looked at me. Yet the minute some people here you have a nice house and your dad is a doctor they instantly make stupid assumptions like many people have already made here.

You have a problem when your dad is throwing $12,000 at you for a car and you complain.

Your DAD wants to buy you a $12,000 car and you're BITCHING?!!!

I've NEVER had a car that costs even CLOSE to $12,000.

Sorry but it's real hard for me to feel even the least bit of sympathy for anyone who is getting handed $12K.

Just be HAPPY your DAD can afford to buy you a car!

BTW: I didn't read evey post in this thread.
And I think it's GREAT your Dad can afford to help you out. I wish mine could have.

It looks like he is happy that his father is buying him a car. He's not happy that half of the people here are acting like bitter & jealous children because of it.

in the end, I'll take whatever he gives me. But as long as there are better options for the money I'm gonna try and change his mind. If that makes me a snob, so be it.

My issue wasn't your father buying you a car, it was with you thinking a sensible car was too pedestrian for you and you wanting to find a way to manipulate him into an infinity or something. I would encourage you to make the best of his gift and get a car that will last and not one because it will make your friends say wow. A cheaper car is an excellent idea but don't blow too much on stereo gear, save some of it if you can, you'll be glad you did later.

but meh, you people would be right if this dude already had the new car. but he doesnt. its still all down the road, in their heads...so it doesnt hurt to try and get the best for the money that is going to be spent anyway...whether all of you jealous people like it or not..

but i agree he was being a dink for that one comment...but you people just use that as an excuse to have a spaz

The Camry is a good car, but it is not the only good car.

It could be argued that a 6 cylinder is more likely to have failures (more parts = more opportunities for failures). But honestly, how many modern cars have engine problems such as valvetrain issues?

NOTE TO HATERS
Nobody cares that you parents didn't buy you a car. Nobody cares how hard you worked to buy one. His parents are buying him one. Get over it. Maybe next we should debate who's job was more difficult when working to pay for a car? I'd like to see those IT professionals surfing the web all day get a job requiring hard work like "bailing hay like my grand daddy did. "You don't know what real work is, boy."

Why do you care if you see a white boy driving a nice car daddy bought him? If this bothers you as much as some of you suggest, perhaps an examination of your life is needed.

Ditto.

Good luck on whatever car you get.

You can probably get a pretty recent camry with all the trimmings for $12,000. There are so many around that dealerships buy them in bulk at auctions. We've got at least one used car lot here in Worcester that sells nothing but used camrys and altimas. (Got mine there for a steal)

Pretty nice car really. If you can't talk him out of 4 cylinder camry, at least get him to shop around and find one you like...there are plenty to pick from. Just avoid the ubiquitous beige one so that you can pick it out in a parking lot. =)

I typed something and got rid of it. I don't even wanna get involved. People around he should just grow up. Parents help their kids out and those kids will one day grow up and help their kids. It's called family. I don't see a problem with this at all.

Have you looked into how much insurance will be on the Camry vs the I30? That's something to factor in as well.

Edit: Whoops, didn't see there was a second page... he already decided on an Accord. Are you going to get a V6 or a 4-cylinder in the Accord?

One theory on why people hate kids whose parents buy them nice cars: they tend to have less respect for the car, because they didn't pay for it. So they drive more agressively and dangerously than they would if they were footing the bill themselves. I knew a lot of spoiled rich kids in college who didn't treat their expensive cars as well as they should have. Mostly girls, but guys too.

Yeah, I agree as well.

Sudheer, I don't side with you on the Infiniti I30 tho, because it IS an older car, so more likely to have problems, even though they are considered pretty reliable. I would say Maxima, probably a 2000 I think is doable if you do some searching. Look in big cities around you, and check the usual websites. They have pretty good databases of available cars.

I'll be buying a car soon, and I'm scared to come here for advice....even THO I am the one that's gonna be paying for it.

It's so apparant that jealousy totally skews all common sense.

"My daddy didn't buy me a car.. f you you spoiled brat!"

All you people flaming him for trying to convince his dad to buy him a superior product for the same amount of money are complete idiots. Probably a bunch of cocky 20 or 30 somethings that have the whole "back in my day, things were better. spoiled kids.. blah blah" angry nerd mentality.

Get over it. Some people are luckier than you. It's a fact of life that must be dealt with.

I've been through hell and back with that car and its got almost 400,000 miles on it. I've had to deal with the car stalling on the freeway, numerous engine failures, and not having airbag's for more than 3 years. Don't tell me I'm being spoiled, I want something that works, is reliable, and has good performance.

Now my dad said he would only pay $10,000, so I'm fronting $2000 on my own. I have saved up some cash from previous birthdays and old jobs. Is it wrong for me to want a car that's a little faster and looks better than a Camry? I'm trying to maximize the money that I'm allowed to spend, and I don't see a problem in wanting something just a little bit decent. After all I'm gonna have it for 3 more years so I'd rather have something that wouldn't break down.
Well maybe you could talk your dad into spending the 10k on a car more to your liking, back it up with facts/figures re: resale value, engine efficiency, etc., and tell him you are going to hold your 2k in reserve for any repairs that might crop up, that way he won't feel like his 'investment' is going to flounder if/when your car starts to have problems. Do you think he might go for that?
